In Greek mythology Naiads are a type of nymph presiding over lakes, springs and rivers. Their water is said to have healing properties and if drunk will inspire poetry and prophecies.
Villagers would make offerings at their springs to keep the spirits happy and ensure prosperity for their village.
Easily jealous they would often entice their lovers to drown.
