Edd = 10 yrs

It’s the age-old question; what on God’s green earth is under Double D’s hat?
Like everyone else, the mystery of what it could be plagued me as a child, and as an adult my curiosities are far more limited by actual possibility (realistic ones, anyway).
In fact, when I was a kid I once actually dreamt of what was under his hat…
It was as ridiculous as you’d expect it to be, but that’s a story for another day.

A look at Edd’s wiki page gave me one very disturbing yet realistic possibility.
Evidently, his voice actor hinted tongue-in-cheek that he could be harboring an undeveloped, conjoined twin.
But even so, I would hope his parents wouldn’t be so negligent as to deny him surgery to…ya know… remove that fuckin’ thing.
So I digress.
Audiences simply weren’t meant to know exactly what it was, and that makes it fun!
However, since I have stumbled into the fandom of EEnE (however much I tried to deny it), I must concoct my own head canon for what’s really under the hat.
HEAD CANON INBOUND!

~~Under the Ski Hat~~

When Edd was roughly two years old, he began developing a small growth on the more left side of his head.
At first, doctors passed it off as something meaningless, but within a year it grew a little more, and his parents knew there was something more to it
Upon taking him to the doctor once more, they ran tests and come to find, it was a tumor.
Benign, thankfully, but its presence was most unsettling.
Unfortunately, his parents couldn’t afford to have it removed, and thus their son was doomed to live with it until they could afford the operation.

As the years went on, it grew only very very slowly, occasionally being checked up on to be monitored and ensure that it would not become cancerous.
And as young Edd was made aware of the growth, and gained the self-awareness to become self-conscious, he began living in an oversized ski hat, which he’s worn ever since.
Different ones as he grew, of course, and multiple ones to be switched out and as backup, but regardless he remained bound by it.
In his last year of middle school, Edd’s parents finally managed to get him into surgery and have the growth removed.
Relieved, but now left with a small scar and a bald spot (well, more bald than it used to be), he continued to cover his head with the hat.

~~Today~~

Three years later, Edd is free from the burden of that tumor and has a full, completely normal head of hair.
To any who saw him, they would never know what he went through.

Despite now being “normal,” Edd still sports his hat at all times.
His parents were a tad frustrated at first when he wouldn’t relinquish it, but eventually came to understand that it’s simply ingrained in him.
Edd is, after all, a sensitive soul who thrives best when he feels he is safe.

~~His peers~~

When Ed and Eddy saw his head for the first time, they were shocked and stunned, but never actually teased Double D about it.
Eddy did threaten to use it as blackmail should he “need to,” but outside of this it never came up in conversation.
Why the boys showed such an odd streak of maturity is up for debate, though it’s possible Eddy and even the dim-witted Ed understood that it was personal, and/or felt profound empathy for him.
Not to mention, Edd told them if they told anyone he would never speak to them ever again.
It would seem they respected his privacy, surprisingly.

Oh and by the way cancer can go brain itself.

Hope this seems reasonable.
In addition to being unable to afford it, I can also imagine his parents putting it off over and over again out of negligence because they knew it wasn’t life-threatening.
I have mixed feelings about Edd’s parents (as I do about all of them), but HC is yet to come.
