I think you've bailed it, son.

Jesus W. Christ, half a gigabyte for a photoshop file. o_o

Interestingly enough, you paint everything on one layer. This is curious because layers are a feature of digital painting. On the other hand, in traditional art, which I would consider my forte, this is not possible, and yet, whenever the planets align and I get to paint digitally, I split everything up into lots of layers.
There's a bunch of reasons for that:

  • I can work on individual elements of the picture without regard for the rest of the picture. In particular, when I move an element, I don't have to fix the background at the place from where I moved it. If the colors are bad, I can easily fix just the colors of one element without having to approximate its contours with the lasso tool (or even mess around with weird digital trickery I know nothing about when I have to fix more complicated things like gradients).
  • It's easy to add or remove individual elements.
  • As the name suggests, it's easy to layer elements.
  • Preserving layer transparency. This is surprisingly important for me because as a noob in the digital medium I don't really know how to get gradients right without bleeding over the edge of the element as I simply use a very soft brush and apply the color of choice to get a gradient.
  • Of course, there are also some drawbacks to layering:
  • Though I guess it always depends on the type of image, managing layers takes more time. This is especially true when you get some crazy idea such as that, perhaps, the image should make sense even when hiding individual elements (i.e. their drop shadows on other elements need to disappear as well, etc.).
  • It can be reflected in the image's composition when the image is composed of layers that are always on top of one another, which can look static as opposed to dynamic and lively.

My file ends up in about 1gb with only one layer, it's good to work big imo
