They are even capable of deploying attack, defense, and EWAR cruisers from external hardpoints. Carriers, like other capital ships, can also provide air traffic control for their local area.
The tradeoff is that they lack the firepower of battleships, but they are still well-defended, and are usually accompanied by battleships anyway.
