Description This was inspired by another of Tolkien's works. This story was quite a sad one

(may contain spoiler and I paraphrased it if memory serves me right )

Luthien, who is an elf maiden with the blood of a Valar was the only daughter of Thingol and Melian. She fell in love with a mortal man, Beren. Thingol believing that a mere mortal man cannot possibly be worthy for the love of Luthien send him on an impossible task to obtain one of the Silmarils (a very special jewel) on the crown of Morgoth (an evil overlord) and only shall he give the blessing to their marriage. Determined, Beren went on a quest to retrieve the Silmaril however not without roadblocks. Luthien, sensing her beloved was in great peril wanted to go to Beren's aid but her leaving was betrayed by her friend to Thingol and so her father locked her up to keep her in the safety of their home. With her Valar powers, she managed to escape but was captured on the way once more. She had help from a hound named Huan in her escape. Together, they went to Beren's aid.

Again with her powers, she put all of Morgoth's creatuers and Morgoth himself to sleep. Beren then used a special blade to cut out one of the Silmarils.. He then tried to remove another but the blade broke and chipped Morgoth on the cheek awakening him. As they attempted to escape, the gate was guarded by a werewolf who later bit off Beren's hand and swallowed the Silmaril with it. He was then burned by the Silmaril and ran away. In the end, the eagles came and assisted with their escape.

They managed to return home and told Thingol of all that has happened and it left Thingol's heart softened and allowed for their marriage even though Beren didn't return with the jewel. Later, Beren and Huan decided to track that werewolf but was already in the city wreaking havoc due to the jewel in his stomach. Beren and Huan tried to stop him and succeeded but got killed in the process. Before Beren's death, he slit open the werewolf's belly and retrieved the jewel and handed it to Thingol. Grieving, Luthien died too as a result.

She came to the hall of Mandos and sang of songs that she will never see Beren again. Mandos was moved by only this one time and consulted with Iluvatar and Luthien was then given two options; to live in the land of the immortal and forget all her grief and enjoy eternal happiness with her people or return to the land of Middle Earth together with Beren to be a mortal herself, accepting whatever unknown faith awaits them. And so she picked the latter.

Her parents grieved over her choice knowing the doom of mortality were written in her eyes ad they would be parted forever...

** This is me... imagining Luthien and Beren's spirit meeting at the western shores and being reborn into mortals.

I've always loved the story of Beren and Luthien in the Silmarillion, there are so many stories and tales and so forth in it that could easily be their own book or individual story...Beren and Luthien's account is definitely one of those.

I admit it has been a very long while since I read anything in the Silmarillion, so I don't really remember it too well, but the eagles were also involved in their story? I'm not remembering that at all for some reason...and I usually remember what stories and adventures that the eagles are involved in simply because Tolkien liked to use them so much That's the one weakness of his work I think, relying so much on the eagles to get characters out of a jam or just to intervene in a situation...

I totally agree on Beren and Luthien's love that can easily be their own book and yeah... the eagles did come to get them out of trouble. He does like to use them in the end but oh well, his story and imagination is so detailed and vast, I'm sure we can let that one slide He does make great stories

It's too bad the stories in the Silmarillion aren't full stories on their own :/ 'Cause I know I'd love to read them like Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, I'll bet if Tolkien had had more time to work on them they probably would have gotten a lot more fleshed out, or at least certain ones would have like the tale of Beren and Luthien, or other ones that were rather fleshed out, like the story about the family of Hurin, or the downfall of Numenor....

And yeah, haha, I'm definitely willing to forgive the frequent use of the eagles, haha, as you said, the stories are all great enough to begin with it doesn't really matter....and besides, one thing I've noticed is that almost every author has one plot-point or element that they use pretty frequently.

Yeah, I wished the Silmarillion is a full story by itself but I think it was only mere rough work on how the world was made because after his death is only when his son, Christopher Tolkien edited it and published it later on. But the Lord Of The Rings was pretty epic. The Hobbit was, I think, a totally different aura because it is a children's book but it was cute at some plots like chasing the elfs of Mirkwood.

Yeah, if you follow an author enough, you can see his pattern of telling s story. It can sometimes deter you from liking his work in the long run but so far, I've read LOTR, the Hobbit and Silmarillion. The plots, in my opinion, are very different which is nice but save for the eagles >< but I really like the beginning of Silmarillion, so much detail in it's ceration, just leaves me at awe
