Description Given the current restrictions based on me by my CFS, my output of photographs has been very limited (ie. have taken nothing at all) So today I thought I'd at least try and do something - and so set up some stuff in my room and came out with this.

A 'mudra' is a symbolic gesture made with the hand or fingers. The mudras of the Buddha are an essential part of Buddhist iconography. Knowing the various mudras can help you to understand what exactly the Buddha is 'saying'. There are 5 basic mudras, being - the teaching mudra, the meditation mudra, earth touching mudra, fearless mudra and welcoming mudra. Each corresponds to a certain event in the historical life of the Buddha.

This particular mudra is that of the 'teaching Buddha', or the 'turning of the Wheel of Dharma'. It was used by Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha) during his first sermon after reaching enlightenment. The hands are held level with the chest - symbolising that the Buddha's teachings came directly from his heart.

There are other ways to identify the Buddha (or a Buddha) aswell. There are 32 main bodily signs (called 'lakshana') and 80 smaller signs that represent Buddhahood. Take the signs in this picture for example....
-Long slender fingers
-Third 'spiritual eye' in centre of brow
-Small pointy curles of hair on head
-Gently curved shoulders
-Rounded, smooth cheeks
-Full lips
-Creases in skin on the neck
-Elongated ear lobes

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photograph.
Have a lovely day.

orange is supposedly the most 'friendly' or 'inviting' color. fits well with the buddha. well that and the fact i'm buddhist.

the challenge for teachers is not only to know how to teach to people who are interested, but also to inetrest people who are not .. But I get you can do it.. or teach at the uni (then you don't care about people not following teh classes)

I know you're not meant to within a temple.... but that's more to do with disturbing people.

This is a very nice setup, I like how the background complements the statuette in the foreground.
The image passes on the message of tranquility very well.

That is an expressive photograph. The overall tone and color (and the scratches on the metal) give it an emotional value. I do wonder though, whether the point of focus should be on the hands.
Very beautiful.

I like how the hands our slightly out of focus drawing the eye directly to the face of the Buddah. Very nice mimick of colors seen in the worn parts around the face and the similar color of the cloth in the background. However, the left hand corner is slightly busy drawing focus away from the main image.
