Description On our second visit to Vik we were welcome by an incredibly cold and windy day. Determined to shoot at all costs, we headed down to the shore when a massive sleet storm suddenly began. For a long while we were just standing there like penguins, cursing the moment we got out of the car, but the short periods of time when the sleet stopped scourging were worth it all.
The soft white sleet had spread perfectly evenly on the black sand, creating a spectacle and an atmosphere unlike any I had ever witnessed before. In a strike of pure luck, a passing wave swept some of the sleet into a zigzag pattern, ending exactly at a small rock, just inches from where I was standing. I quickly took advantage, and (just!) managed to shoot the wave receding from the foreground it had so beautifully created.

If you'd like to experience and shoot this magical location, among many other incredible icy sceneries, you're welcome to join my upcoming 'Land of Ice' Iceland winter workshop taking place January 2013.

I had the privilege of seeing a black sand beach while on vacation in Maui, Hawaii once. It was a sight I will never forget.

And the scene you captured here is equally stunning. Thank you for sharing this view with us.

It looks like the sea is made from salt or sugar.

It's so abstract; it's almost hard to tell what it is. Great shot.

Very nice shot. This is a type of picture that takes a second look to comprehend what the picture is about. Definately one of the most memorable pictures I've seen in a while.

This is an incredible shot. When I first saw it I thought the ocean was a sheet of black ice. Very cool
