Actually, in this instance the boxes are symbolic of how the potential of each cutie mark's owner needs to be set free. It's Fine Crime's (the stallion in the middle) job to find the other five ponies and help them unlock that potential.

I made my pony stand in the middle of the circle as the marks search the hidden potential in him then the worthy mark will glow and the unworthy will fade. They will have two marks after that initiation
