Description Quick pic I put together of my new Pathfinder character, Nhil. Since my previous character, an alchemist named Bipin, became King of the Monkeys (true story), I made a new character to accompany the party. He's a semi-custom character that I worked on with the DM to insert into the current story. So many colors! But I had fun sketching him. And if anyone out there is wondering why a reptilian might have hair...well, he wasn't always so scaly. But that's a story for another day.

I admit I would like to try some process work or tutorials sometime. ^_^ For something like this, I do the sketch in grayscale so I'm not distracted by color when doing light and shadow and shape. Then add the colors as a separate layer and refine the picture. Details like scales or hair shading I typically do last.

oh wow.
so the sketches are lineart with an ides of where to put what and then after that is the shadows and colours.
can i ask how you got the forms and general look of her face, did you use references or just draw free hand?

Yes, I put down a sketch with loose lines and greyscale, to get a basic idea for the values I want. Then the color layer, and then if I need to bump up the shadow areas I use a multiply layer for shadow, or a screen or overlay layer if I want to bump up the light areas. Then just going over it all with a standard layer (or a few) to smooth things out and put in the details.
Most of this particular drawing was free hand, but in all honesty, references are very good to have, and I'm often guilty of not using them when I probably should.

Ahh ok. you make it sound so easy yo know. i'm still learning so i can only hope to get to your level.
may i please use your work as a reference for one of my own characters i keep having trouble with presenting scales and you have given me a great idea on how to keep it subtle.

You certainly may use it as a reference. ^_^

For scales and feathers, I've found it's often easier to do a "lost and found" approach. Instead of doing every single scale in meticulous detail, just define some of the larger ones (like the forehead or the belly scales in this case), and as for the rest, a bit of color/texture in strategic locations. Our eyes don't naturally view in hi-def or see every single detail at once when we look at something.

My best advice would be to just keep on drawing. ^_^ Don't give up, and you'll get there.
