England, 1862—where my next vaguely planned novel series will take place! These are the two main characters, Willem Van Beck, the son of Dutch emigrants, and Azalis, the outcast of a flock of winged people, or avians, who live in the land of Hecra. When disaster strikes Hecra, Azalis, unwilling to risk harm for the people who despise her, flees for the human world and runs headlong into a falconer. Little does Aza know, however, that the avian disaster had made the trip to the human world as well, and she is the one responsible for the shadows creeping into the lamplit London streets.
