Description Hello!!!! Just so you all know I have been doing inktober! Mostly on my instagram and tumblr though. I figured I would just post one deviation on here once I was done. Would you like that or prefer individuals? But i have already finished one month of fear piece, and about to do the next but its due today so it will probably be late AAAAAAAND on top of that I made 3 pieces for an art gallery, including this one, I call them the "Bird Trilogy" lol!!! This one is Swim, and there is also a Flight and Perch. I think this one is my favorite just because I love the sky!!!! can you tell I have been liking space lately? like this other one, teehee!

Watercolor, 9.5 x 12.5 inches ish its a weird size lol

and here are the other two in this little bird series

I love how imaginative you are, and how that flaming moon has made multiple appearances! This is gorgeous.

Thanks!!! I have been considering more planets and stuff lately. In the past I was exclusively fantasy but maybe this kind of sci-fi is ok

Wow, this is stunning!   The sky is gorgeous, but the dynamic waves are just as amazing in their own way. I think my favorite part is actually the water trails behind the penguins. They look so real!

thank you so much for the lovely comment! I'm so glad you think so, that part was really hard! I was just kind of making circles and going UHHHH.... IHOPETHISTURNSOUTOKAY?!?!?! lol I'm so glad you liked the sky too, that part I was unsure about because it wasn't a specific nebula or anything >.>

Sometimes it's those kinds of experiments that turn out the best. Do you have any tips for someone who is still a beginner with watercolors?

Ellofayne In reply to The-Wandering-Bird [2016-10-19 17:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Usually I hate experimenting lol! Unless I like it I feel like I wasted the paint and paper and I'm too frugal for that _._ lol.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... I honestly still consider myself a beginner!! lol! I'm going to give you the dumb advice of keep practicing, just because with experience you CAN tell how the watercolor will start to behave. I used to think I never would and it has a mind of its own but now... I can kind pf predict things to make them happen on purpose/ avoid disasters lol. I still use all the super cheap reeves watercolor... I bought the set of 12 like 6 years ago now! And it still is lasting fine, and I have never tried any of the professional stuff, or any other brand so I don't know what I'm missing. I really long for a peach/ flesh tone, or a good orange or something because I always feel like my colors are off because I have to mix them. But like I said I never made it to the store because I'm cheap (and well broke). Ask me any specific questions and I will try to answer!

Oh and I recently learned about "granulation" in watercolor. It's something I like and always tried for, especially with salt and stuff, so learning about all this is really cool! And the rest of his tutorials and stuff is good too, I like his channel www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjtmhy…

Thanks ^_^ I don't think that's dumb advice at all. Practicing is the best learning tool. I think my main weakness is being too cautious when I experiment with watercolors. I'm terrible at mixing colors or making sure I have enough of a color I want, so I've been using pan watercolors and "mixing" by layering the colors I have. I think what I'd like to know about the most is making good washes. My watercolor washes always look so messy and I can't figure out how to make them look better. I'm not sure if I'm going too fast or too slow, or what.

Thanks again for the tips. I'll be sure to check out the video soon

Yeah, that channel and really a ton of others taught me a lot! And also make me want to paint when I'm feeling blegh and don't want to. Watching someone else makes me go ooooo I want to try that! lol. I feel like I'm really bad at mixing colors too. And I never really mastered the even "wash", mine are always messy too, so I just make sure to always avoid them LOL!! I just set up my composition or idea to make sure I don't need one it's really horrible! But I really like a lot of texture, so I never really need one, if it's grass I go crazy with plants and if its a sky I go crazy with clouds or galaxies or whatever. This piece was actually going to be my attempt at a "wash" with the undersea portion, but I messed it up with some of the cauliflowers and then that was it. I shrugged and went oh well and added more on purpose and made it crazy anyway (but it probably would have already been crazy anyway with the bubble streams)

Texture is a lot more visually interesting anyway I've tried to do a water wash right before to aid the colors blending, and that seems to help a bit, but it's the best I've gotten so far. I think the cauliflowers look great. Mine don't usually turn out very vivid when I try them.
