Description An alien organism inspired by Salvador Dali's painting 'Los Elefantes' ("The Elephants"). Made in 2009.

The Alienphant's trunk is compact and egg-shaped, and the back is fringed by a double row of rigid, triangular plates. It stands on two long legs with simple, three-pointed feet. Hanging from the backside there's a smaller limb which ends in a hook-like claw. This third limb is a vestige of this creature's tripedal ancestors, but its actual function remains unclear. Located in the front, just below the 'shoulder blades', there are two wide respiratory orifices. The neck is long and flexible, and is covered with a mane of spiky filaments on the upper part.Β
The most distinctive feature of this Alienphant's head is the long, inflatable proboscis which can be protracted and retracted at will. At the end of this proboscis are three grasping appendages, also inflatable and equiped with sharp claws. This creature's lower jaw is short and has single row of teeth disposed in a comb-like fashion, the last of which is much longer than the rest. The upper jaw, on the other hand, has two rows of teeth and is disconnected from the skull, so that it is projected forward when the proboscis is protracted. It possesses three eyes: a large one in the front of the head, which is none too disimilar from those of Earth's vertebrates and cephalopods, and a pair of more primitive eyes sticking out of the crown. It also has a pair of slit-like external ears, located on the sides of the head. Just in front of these, there are a pair of fleshy, bright-coloured and fin-looking appendages which are likely used for communication and display.Β

In this picture, an Alienphant is represented preying on a much smaller organism, with three stilt-like legs, asymmetric eyes and a single grasping claw.

Interesting concept, especially it's trunk and mouth anatomy. The style is somewhat similar to "Planete Sauvage". Though I can't quite grasp the purpose of the orifices on the creature's chest. If there are already "nostrils" on it's head what are these for? Are they for something other than breathing or it's respiratory system is that different?

I drew this creature 5 years ago, I didn't really think how the anatomy would work - I'd say the chest orifices are part of the respiratory system, while the narrow orifices on the head are actually external ears. Β

Very good for a first illustration. Reminds me of that movie called "Splice"

Sorry it took so long to respond to this. It reminds me of Splice because it has the stinger at the end of it. did you see that movie?

Quite grotesque. What sort of strange evolutionary conventions do this creature's kin follow?

Believe it or not this creatures is based in the long legged elephants of DalΓ.

Well, I thought from small pack hunters up to carnivore giants larger than the greater theropods that ever existed on our Earth

Ah. I mean, what bizaare sort of common ancestor produced this creature's symmetry?
