Description A while ago I was thinking about how long it had been since I pixeled a 'crazy' gradient, so I set out to make one. My mind jumped from 'stupidly complicated gradient' to 'Iris' to 'Virgil's description of Iris in the Aeneid', which is the equivalent of 'you didn't think that such a gradient was enough, did you? Add some wings. Saffron-coloured ones. And a rainbow... don't forget the rainbow. You know what? Make it a transparent sash over that gradient dress.' ... Yes, my mind does work like that.
Erm, it's supposed to be Iris, goddess of the rainbow and divine messenger. I based her on a beautiful description by Virgil that I once had to translate in Latin class: "Ergo Iris croceis per caelum roscida pennis
mille trahens varios adverso sole colores
devolat et supra caput astitit."
I like the face and the gradient. Also, that scroll is supposed to be materialising out of nothing. She is a goddess after all
Also, the sticker effect is there because she's part of my site's new layout, so she's made to be placed on a background that's way to big to upload as a normal doll.

I fail at commenting on things on time

The rainbow sash has to be my favorite part - it's so well done and beautiful. The colors are so soft and the gradient is so smooth! I love every little bit of it! ^^

And I fail at replying on time XD My apologies for that.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like the rainbow sash, it was quite easy to make, but it took ages because of all the colours >_<

Can I use this in my powerpoint for english? I got Iris for my goddess. Even if it is not the greek, the picture is still perfect!

Of course you can As long as you don't claim it as your own or redistribute it, it's fine. Also, I'm really honoured that someone wants to use it for a powerpoint ^^

I won't. We're including a bib so I'll include it with it. How do you bib a deviant art though?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elaitea In reply to mythelf [2012-04-10 19:38:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, I can't really answer that question as I'm not familiar with the English term 'bib' and the dictionary isn't giving me any useful information either

mythelf In reply to Elaitea [2012-04-18 12:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Its short for bibliography. Im not good at spelling (or any of my friends) so we write bib instead. You know, like easybib?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elaitea In reply to mythelf [2012-04-18 14:50:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay ^^ Here, we usually use 'bi(e)b' as an abbreviation for 'bibliotheek' (which would be 'library' in English), so I wasn't sure what to make of it. I had never heard of easybib before you mentioned it. We don't use it here.

I'm just in awe of this piece. The gradient is so beautiful and then I see the transparent rainbow.
She's just beautiful overall. Great pixel art.

Congrats on the DD!

Thank you so much for the kind comment While making this doll, I never thought so many people would pay attention to the transparent rainbow XD

Her dress is gorgeous and the subtle colour changes in her dress caught my attention. The wings are incredibly detailed and seem to have taken up a lot of time. And her hair looks so realistic. She's very pretty! Rainboooow. I'm sure this took you a while. How long, may I ask?

Elaitea In reply to parachute-tonight [2012-03-14 20:17:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh, thank you so much for the wonderful comment The wings actually didn't take much more time than the other parts of the doll. It's just a pain to put all the details on them XD I think the whole thing took me about 3 or 4 weeks, working on and off, including some days that I just stared at it and moved about two pixels

parachute-tonight In reply to Elaitea [2012-03-17 15:16:58 +0000 UTC]

The product is well worth it though! I think that's the thing about pixel art, or everything in general, everything you put in appears in the product.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elaitea In reply to parachute-tonight [2012-03-24 01:11:55 +0000 UTC]

It certainly is! It's quite satisfying to finish a decent piece of work after spending so much time on it. Also, I find it hard to finish something quickly, I just can't get all the detailing done in a few days. The shading itself doesn't take a lot of time, but it's the tweaking and detailing to get things to look right that takes several days.

Oh, she isn't my absolute favourite goddess as I prefer Pallas Athena. But at least Iris seems to be one of the more level-headed goddesses in Greek mythology, so I do appreciate her more than some of the other goddesses

Beautiful! I can't put into words how great this is. The sheer rainbow sash is a lovely touch.... how did you do that?!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elaitea In reply to nekoFLASHstudios [2012-03-14 19:32:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much The technique I use for making sheer clothing is a combination of the techniques I use for patterns and for gradients (I've got tutorials about those on my site). It's hard to explain it in words Basically it's a matter of making the right palettes and dividing the sheer cloth in sections (i.e. one that goes over the skin, another one that goes over the dress,...). I might make a tutorial about it someday.
