Scientific Name: Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis
Pronunciation: pack-ee-seff-ah-low-sore-us
Meaning in Latin: Thick-headed lizard
Code Name: Pachy
Discovered by: Barnum Brown & Erich Maren Schlaikjer, 1943
Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Reptilia, Dinosauria, Ornithischia, Genasauria, Neornithischia, Cerapoda, Marginocephalia, Pachycephalosauria, Pachycephalosauridae, Pachycephalosaurini
Temporal range: Late Cretaceous, 70 to 66 million years ago
Location: USA - Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming
Length: 4.5 meters (14.8 feet) long
Weight: 450 kilograms (990 lbs)
Diet: Herbivore, but may have possibly been an omnivore too
Pachycephalosaurus may have been poorly known for only a single 60 centimeters (23.5 inches) long domed skull, but it was known to be the biggest of the pachycephalosaurids, the group of bone-headed dinosaurs. The skull roof had the distinctive solid bony dome that is 25 centimeters (10 inches) thick, thought to have been used as a battering ram in fighting off against predators or in head-to-head male disputes over females. This may be unlikely as the thick neck that supports the head was insufficiently strong to withstand such forces based on recent studies. The snout of Pachycephalosaurus was relatively long and decorated with horns and lumps. Similar lumps and horns covered the back of the skull. Large eye sockets suggest that the animal had great eyesight and vision. The leaf-shaped teeth the mouth possess are small and rigid, indicating that Pachycephalosaurus ate a mixed diet of plant material ranging from leaves to seeds to fruit. They are accompanied by the sharp serrated teeth used to grind the tougher plants, but may have also provided the dinosaur an omnivorous diet. While Pachycephalosaurus never have most of the remains discovered to fill in the anatomy, many restorations depict its general shape to that of the ornithopods at bipedal stance, having a bulky body, long stiff tail carried on top of the long, muscular legs, and shorter, thinner arms with small hands.
Dracorex and Stygimoloch, two other relatives of Pachycephalosaurus, had smaller domes and larger horns than their cousin and lived at the same time as it. Jack Horner, however, thinks that the three animals are of the same species, simply representing the different growth stages; losing the long spikes and growing the dome shape bigger as they age in this case.
