He becomes obsessed with mirrors.

It's the only way his twin visits anymore. He wastes his days away just staring at the mirror in their room in their flat above their store. The store grows dusty, his eyes grow darker, and still he sits.

People visit, he's sure. At times he can almost feel their presence- his mother, Bill, Harry, Ginny, all the others; even Charlie and Fleur- but he pays them no mind. Fred is his only focus.

He is glad when his hair grows longer. He has been waiting for it to cover the hole in his head, to shadow the major difference between he and his twin.

When he reaches out for Fred, Fred always reaches back, and it delights him to no end. Fred always shows that easy smile, and he realizes that he's giving it back. These times with Fred are the only times he can ever smile.

"Your eyes look different," he says, and Fred has said something too, but he never catches a word. "Not as dark."

Fred just smiles. George smiles back.

At one point Bill comes again and tries to pull him away. George lashes out, and Fred lashes with him, though his twin's efforts are futile. Bill leaves with new scars.

Percy visits, too. "You know, you're not the only one who misses him." George ignores him.

"They don't understand, Freddie," George whispers when Percy is gone. Fred agrees with him by mouthing his words. "They don't."

Eventually even Bill and his mother stop coming. George doesn't mind. He has Fred. They smile together. It doesn't even matter that Fred has trouble talking. He knows his twin's voice will return soon. And so he waits out the months.

But then Percy returns. He is covered in snow ("what month is it, Freddie?") and he has a hammer. George's eyes widen when he sees it, because he recognizes it. It belongs to Fred.

"What are you doing?" he snaps, the first thing he's said to anyone but Fred in months.

"Getting you out of here!" Percy shouts, and swings the hammer. George is too weak to stop him.

The mirror shatters. Fred is gone. And George weeps.
