Description This I did on normal sketch paper first in graphite, then inked with a glass dip pen and black higgins ink. While many times higgins isn't normally all that great, mine I've used out of the well directly so much that it's been concentrated to an especially black ink... at least that's the excuse I use.

As for this guy, I've been drawing him for a while. While the weird eye in the middle is sorta sci-fi ish in nature, I still chose animal.

Basically, after I inked the drawing, I scanned it and using gimp I inverted the colors and added the glow. Those were so minimal that I still consider this mostly an ink.
I did make a few errors when I was inking this. And you can tell easily that I tried to get gimp to fix them, but that only made it worse... I mean, just look at how unnaturally white it is under the head (where the legs are on the left).

Let that be a lesson to all of you... make sure that if you are posterizing and eliminating graphite marks, you should erase them physically. I thought I could use gimp and the white turned out to not be quite white (hehe, get it? Not quite white... ).

I might post more sketches of the guy, and I'll try to reupload this when I have time to erase the graphite the RIGHT way and resubmit it with the effects and all. If you'd like an xcf with all the layers and stuff that I used to make this guy (the masking was a very tricky process..) just ask. I love gimp's interface for masks. It's a lot more intuitive (FOR ME) than photoshop.

Enjoy...

Critiques (other than the obvious screw up below the guy's chin)?

Great work dude

ya fractals are an easy way to make a backdrop with little or no work. although its often times hard for me to make one that will contrast with the background rather than clash with its color scheme (oh man im using critic speech).

I wholeheartedly hope you get into developing as well, for I got ideas for enhancing gimpressionist so its not so damn hard on the processor. There must be a hole in it somewhere because it processed for 3 HOURS on trying to give a WIP of mine a painterly look. It didn't even started in the process. However, It was a 36 megapixel picture so no wonder it took so long to do nothing. It would rock if someone would create a filter that could do the individual processes done in gimpressionist. That would be much more usefull.

Thanks for the advice on layers. I appreciate it greatly and all the gimpers on DA will probably as well.

Im not sure if the XCF could be uploaded or not, though it pays to ask.

Ah, so did ya wanna look at the xcf files?
I can post em, I'm pretty sure... I hope I can... *shrugs* I'll find a way if you'd like a look.

As for how masks, work, you just gotta remember that masks are meant to invisibly affect the layer (double entendre intended).
More specifically, you are usually expected to edit the mask without actually looking at it, since you are mostly concerned with the
affect it has on the layer (this is a big assumption though). If you want to edit the mask then you have to go to the layer dialog
and actually select that.

You know... I guess I should give a tutorial based of this guy.

Heck yeah... I think I will.

Perhaps then the gimp devs will give me a hand in understanding the hackery f00 and I can start developing for gimp...
*shrugs again*

Either way, I can give you the file and you can play around with it...
I like the fractal stuff you do for backgrounds for your images, btw. Most people don't do backdrops for characters (me included...)
And it's just laziness on our (my) part.
