Description Alternate scene from the Friendship is Magic Season 7 finale Shadow Play. I've drawn a lot of drawings of Chrysalis providing nightmare fuel, so now it's Sombra's turn.

When I heard that the villain of Shadow Play was called 'The Pony of Shadows', I will admit, I was expecting some kind of reference to King Sombra - wouldn't that have been awesome? After watching the episode, I had an alternate universe idea in mind where Sombra was the one that manipulated Stygian into harnessing the power of the shadows and the Pony of Shadows is simply a part of him - seen as the disappearance of the Crystal Empire and the disappearance of the Pillars of Equestria take place roughly the same time frame, I can see it potentially happening. (In fact, I wonder if the Pillars of Equestria ever tried to face Sombra and liberate the Crystal Empire but couldn't until Celestia and Luna stepped in after their banisment.)

I can also see Stygian and Sombra being foils to each other - both are rather scholarly in my opinion (Stygian was the strategist for the Pillars, and Sombra has his awesome planning skills shown in his defences for the Crystal Heart), but while Stygian only turned to dark powers because he was betrayed by his friends and was tired of feeling left out and unappreciated and was looking for strength of his own to become a Pillar, and eventually began to try fighting against it until the Mane Six, Starlight, Sunburst and the Pillars saved him (that one scene where Twilight sees Stygian struggling to break out - I see that as a sign that this isn't exactly what he wanted but the Pony of Shadows was confiding in him to remain bound to him), Sombra relished in dark power to suppress those who opposed him and was content to just harm whoever he wanted.

I too wish that there could have been some connection to King Sombra. Because ironically there was a lot of speculation that the Pony of Shadows in Season 4 might have been him... turns out it wasn't.

On an irrelevant note I found it interesting that we've had three villains so far all with shadow motiffs: King Sombra, the Pony of Shadows, and Tempest Shadow.

Yeah - I remember thinking that back when I watched Castle-mania.

I get the feeling that 'Tempest'/Fizzlepop really thought to herself 'to suit my tough dark image, I'll take inspiration from them!' Makes me wonder what would happen if the resident Meta-Guy Quibble Pants met her - he'd probably assume she's cosplaying.

Makes me wonder what Season 8's will be.

I thought it was a reference to Castle-Maneia, since that also had a being called the Pony of Shadows in it.

I remember that - I initially thought that was a reference to King Sombra as well.
