This is one of those strange pictures that leave me wondering how it would look turned upside down and shown that way. The way the clouds are reflected on the water reminds me deeply of an aurora that I have longed to see (maybe I'll get to someday). Very soothing but with a sense of almost chaotic movement with the angled motion of the clouds. It makes me wonder if something is coming or is about to happen that may not be good, despite the soothing blue tones. Not that such odd feelings are bad. I love photos a that make me feel something, even if its tenstion and dark anticipation.

I got soooooo close to uploading this to the surreal cat. These are the kind of shots I do a LOT of....Long Exposures are soooo much fun and ever since I got the filter to pull off these shots its what I seem to be constantly looking for. I actually had this printed on metallic paper a few weeks back an it only added to the aurora when looking at it. This is a 2 minute exposure and it was a VERY windy day so there is a LOT of movement going on. You are also the first one to hit on the feeling of something ominous or dark associated with this shot. It made me smile when I read it actually. I had a REALLY bad day the day I took this and I am one that has always preached that our emotions can come through in our work....even photographers. That is why I always keep a photography journal. Thank you so much for the amazing insight and words my new friend.

Thank you so much! I so wish I could make it that far north to see the lights sometime. This was taken in my home state of Alabama in the Southeastern part of the US. Thank you for taking a look!

It's so calm and beautiful. What is that filter you mentioned in your description?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dsnider In reply to Rustmouth [2011-02-01 01:25:59 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you my friend! The filter is a Hoya ND400 [link] . It is a VERY dark filter that allows me to shoot these really long exposures like this in the day. Lots and lots of fun. Now I always look very forward to cloudy days!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rustmouth In reply to dsnider [2011-02-02 18:10:40 +0000 UTC]

That sounds really cool actually, maybe I should get one too. Gives a lot more flexibility with long exposure I guess

dsnider In reply to Rustmouth [2011-02-04 01:53:35 +0000 UTC]

I would recommend it! Yeah it brings the whole world of long exposures to life in conditions where it would normally be impossible.

a pleasure, dennis!!

..i just got a new fader filter today(genus)!..you can select from 2-8 stops on it..plus if i throw on my nd8, in combination w/my cpl, would push me up to 11 stops!!..i'm looking foreward to playing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dsnider In reply to db-imagery [2011-01-29 03:49:19 +0000 UTC]

Hehe....I have been "playing" with some things lately as well. Cho and I have come up with the idea of stacking 2 ND400's on top of one another. SUPER LONG day time exposures. Soooooo many possibilities. I am just concerned about vignetting. One tip I think I should give you I have found when shooting at that many stops....its not gonna come out as good if the sun is in the shot at all. Look at MOST of my LE's....I am usually facing away from the sun. Just to much tonal range to fix even with HDR and the vignetting is insane (keep in mind I am pretty new to this stuff to). Also the one thing that Hoya does...it REALLY cools the shot down a bunch. I always throw the white balance through the roof when I am shooting with it but the results still come out nice to me. I will be looking VERY forward to seeing some of this playing you are doing my friend!
