*UPDATE* 07/11/11I've uploaded a higher resolution version at 2560x1440px.
It's now available as a print

I've added a depth of field blur to the image, using Nuke compositing software.

I added some more clouds in the sky hovering around the peak in the background and tweaked the aerial perspective, which gave the environment more depth.

I've been learning Vue for the past week or so and this is my first attempt at creating my own terrain.
I went for a photorealistic feel to the environment, using Vue to generate the mountains using procedural terrains and a multitude of variable sliders.
For texturing the snow and rocks I used a layered texture.
The environment took one day to complete.
This is a raw render of the scene with no postwork done.

Very well done, I thought it was a photography at first but the mountain in the back kinda blew that cover. It is a very beautiful picture and if you worked some more on the depht on that huge mountain this could fool anyone to be a photograph

when I looked at it, I noticed the distant mountain and thought that it was from 3d modeling, and then I looked again and noticed the greater detail in the front and thought it's photography. It was until I read your descriptions that it is indeed from modeling and it's excellent! Was there any reference you made? It looks real!

I didn't use any references for this piece, neither did I model anything. That's not to say I didn't have any input on what it looks like.
It's all generated inside Vue using fractals to give it that high amount of detail you're seeing as well as the varying heights in the terrain.

Yes there's a lot of messing around with values and things to get it the way you'd like it to look.
Then of course there's the texturing part which is much the same.
