Thanks! I'm glad you like it!
The perfect roundness is one of those wonderful things you can only get when painting digitally. It makes for a really cool effect.

If your thought was masking, you'd be partially correct.
It's been a couple years since I painted this, so let me see if I can remember the steps...
I first created a new layer. Then with the selection tool I selected a circular area. Then I filled it with a base color. I deselected, and then locked transparency. With that, I was able to paint the details of the orb without fear of ruining the perfect circle shape.

Yeah. Locking transparency was one of those things I didn't know about myself until just a few years ago. I've found it to be invaluable. When I have a specific region I want to color, I select it, fill it with some sort of base color, and then lock transparency. That way, I can color/paint inside the masked region, and I know I will never go outside the original area.
I'm glad you liked the image! I had a lot of fun illustrating it!

Yeah I was thinking clipping masks C:
Oh really? :3
Ahh yeah that makes sense! Actually I was thinking something pretty much exactly like that too! Its so gorgeous though, I can't believe I didn't notice it before XD

You wouldn't know unless you were looking for it specifically, I think. Clipping mask would be the way to do it in Photoshop. ArtRage doesn't support clipping masks, however, so I had to come up with that little workaround.
I'm glad you like it!

Yeah. As long as you can achieve the effect in either program, the result should be pretty much the same.

Thanks! I really had a lot of fun with this one, especially playing with all of the reflected and refracted light.
