Description         I remember when I know why the cage bird sings
was challenged for the "encouragement to take action
in premarital sex, homosexuality, and the use of
profanity."

I remember when the Bible was banned and/or
challenged for being "pornography and obscene"
in Alaska and Pennsylvania in 1993.

I remember when the The Autobiography of
Malcolm-X was challenged in Flordia in 1994--
because it was "racist against white people"

I remember when Jambo Means Hello: The Swahili
Alphabet was charged with "degrading white
children" although it was a book for white children to
understand the African-American culture much better.

I remember when Daddy's Roomate was removed
by most libraries by most of the United States---for
"promoting gay and lesbian relationships as appropriate."

I remember when Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl
has been challenged in Europe and North America for its
"Depiction of the Nazis as 'cruel and heartless'.

I remember To Kill A Mockingbird has been called
"racist and obscene" because it deals with an African-
American being accused of rape---being removed from
many Canadian lists and taken off of many U.S high
school programs.

        Censor me--censor my books--censor my thoughts--censor
my future at the palm of my hands. Go ahead and censor
my past--my past? you know my past? when my ancestors
where called niggers, spics, crackers, kike, censor my
books when they have taught me about the 6 million--11
million--Holocaust, when slaves were brought to America
in exchange for molasses, the apartheid, the Malcolm-X,
the Dr. King, the Gandhi, the Ottoman Turks that wiped
out a third of the Armenian population in 1915, the AIDS
the needle and the sex that causes AIDS, the war, the
poverty, the guns, the truth.

        Censor me--censor my books--censor my thoughts--censor
the art that has been denied, censor the emotion and the
expression that lies within a photograph, censor System of
a Down, censor Rage against the Machine, censor the color
of my skin, the color of my eyes, the color of my heart, the
expression of my words.

        Censor the Channel Thy Majesty,
                censor the Come on,
                        censor the No nudity,
                                censor the I have witnessed,
                                        censor the Charlie,
                                                censor the common ground,
                                                        censor the Art Politic,
                                                                censor the guerrilla news,
                                                                        censor the dripping blood,

censor me.

This is one of the first poetry pieces I've read on DA. ok, it is the first really. This is very well written. I almost got pissed when I read this....because I've read all of those works (except Jambo Means Hello) that were censored. I guess I'm lucky. It's a shame that peoples minds can be clouded by bigotry, and ignorance when it comes to recognising great writings. Anywho, I dont wanna ramble on. I just want to say, great piece. I'm going to put a link to this in my signature. Ciao

This poem made what was wrong the world all come rushing back to me. Be your own person, America, or be a people magazine cutout. Your poem is one of the more enlightening things i have ever seen. Just compacts all the news we forget in a 30 minute cram of local news whats wrong with the world.

good shit. but the "I rember" is much better than the obvious ranting in the second half. It's almost two piece's stapled together. it's very powerful but the strength really resides in the "I remember" I wouldn't publish it as a single piece. split that up. censoring yourself helps sometimes.

And here I am responding a week late on a beautiful piece like this. Really well-written (save a few typos), and has a lot of insight. I found it a bit biased, but it got your point across very well.

I think censorship is a bit hated for some reason, and while censorship can be bad, it can be good as well. People should self censor, and definately should censor what they allow their children to read and see.

If that includes banning books in high schools, banning music, banning anything, then I think that is fine, IF that is what the people want. Censorship is only a problem when it is forced upon people by the government.
I see no problem with it if people, or a community, or even a nation censor materials themselves. To make the argument that nothing should be censored would be quite stupid, because even this site, no doubt even you, feel that child pornography shouldnt be allowed.

If a community does not want "Daddys Roommate" available at their school library, they should have that freedom.

Children, even high school children, many times want what is not best for them, and I will attest to this from personal experience. If youre 18, I would say youre accountable for yourself, but if you are a minor, then I would have to say, deal with the rules.

Anyways, thats my rant.

I did like this, however, because it didnt pander to any particular ideology, and instead showed how they all are censored at one time or another.

Only criticism I have about this is that it is showing how, at times, ideas which are now popular were censored. The truly important aspect of censorship, in my mind, is the protection of the unpopular idea. It is the hardest to achieve but most essential and defining part of the fight against censorship. If you want to read about some incredibly unpopular ideas that have been effectively censored over the years, I have a terribly-written but somewhat informative post right here: [link]

i usually have nothing to say on 'issue rants' because i think it's all pretty plain to see. everything is subjective and whether i agree with you or not, i thoroughly laud the speaking of minds. however, i thought this was fabulously done. it was fucking emotive, and i wanted to congratulate you on tackling this over0tackled subject so well.

i also urge you to continue along the line of color by replacing 'the expression of my words' with 'the color of my words'
