Description This one was a ton of fun - the theme I was given was Old West meets Far East, with a mischievous coyote placed in a tavern setting... It was great playing with the ambience of the room. I tried to control the palette to really convey the overall temperature and imagined humidity of the environment - and the dust drifting through the door in the background turned out to be a crucial detail, to me. I also like the katana swords with the handles stylized as old-fashioned pistol grips. A commission I did for QuickXyk, who along with his coyote character, can be found here: [link]

hey i am new to deviant art. How did you even do this? I've been mostly drawing on paper and have been seeing these animated works and I am totally jealous. Where would I go to make one of these if you don't hide me asking?

Well, first the composition is sketched in little thumbnails until the perspective and character placing is right. Β Sometimes seperate character drawings are done (like Xyk the coyote) to get the costuming and look right. Β Then the composition is drawn using a blue lead mechanical pencil (which doesn't show up when scanned) and over laid with a regular-lead mechanical pencil. Β After being scanned in the computer, character colors are laid down on a layer in photoshop, then shaded in, remembering atmospheric fades. Β And that's pretty much it, from pencils to computer to finished work.

Okay so to make sure I understand. You take the sketch, overlay it in aΒ blue lead mechanical pencil and than anotherΒ regular lead mechanical pencil (would a normal pencil work for this?) you thanΒ scan the piece and apply colors in the computer. What would I need to scan the piece and what application would you recommend for doing this. I'm very new to the world of art on the whole so I'm sorry for my lack ofΒ knowledge Β

Actually, yes! Β I've got a whole series of commissions from the same customer that I'm working on presently- they string together to form a story, I'm excited to get everything ready to show. Β We're even considering the possibility of putting the final art into a book of sorts.

Can you tell me how to color the lines of my art in photoshop? I googled some tutorials, but they all make it sound complicated.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dreamkeepers In reply to The-Inkmancer [2011-11-15 16:52:05 +0000 UTC]

It can be, depending on how you work. The way it's done with Dreamkeepers seems to change every once in a while, but here's a quick method:
- Before you start any kind of coloring, make the sketch layer it's own layer.
- Make the image Grayscale (image>Mode>Grayscale)
- Select>Load Selection. Make sure "invert" is checked." Click OK
- Select>Inverse
- Press Delete. You should now have the sketch on it's own, without all the white.
- On the Layers panel, you can click "Lock Transparent Pixels" and be able to color the sketch lines without a problem.
- Turn the image back into RGB color mode and begin coloring!

Hope that helps ^^

Ah, thank you for the compliments, and for the invite as well! I would be more interested in joining the group, but as you can see by my hideous reply lag, I'm having a tough enough time even just keeping up with my personal account. Thank you anyways for the kind words though, we'll do our best to keep the art on the way!

I want this as a desktop background SO BADLY! Is there any way you could release a higher resolution version? If you're worried about art theft or if I need to ask QuickXyk first just say so, please.

Dreamkeepers In reply to Guy-Staring-At-You [2010-09-24 03:42:04 +0000 UTC]

Ooh - a desktop background of this would be fun, and a lot of people like it... I'll go ask the commissioner about the idea, and if it's okay I think we'l definitely be posting a desktop-sized version. Thank you for the idea!

kinda reminds me of the universe from Joss Whedon's Firefly. it was a culture very similar to this, with the Old West meets Far East theme.

vitaedigest [2010-06-07 20:59:05 +0000 UTC]

that is pure genius: the expressions have a great style and cartoonishness about them and the colours are expertly handled.
Plus whenever I see artwork with anthro styles like this, I always imagine a new film idea for every picture that I see, so this one worked for me!
