Alternate Title "1866, The Year Everything went Wrong"A family portrait of my OC, Adele Black's family a few years later when she is older. Her brother, Adam has passed away from pneumonia and even the birth of her baby sister, Gwendoline, cannot snap her parents out of their state of mourning.
I could go into Adele's backstory, but I kind of want these drawings to do the talking.
Hoping to have a few more drawings finished and posted today and tomorrow.
So many characters of mine have been neglected. Where to start.

Danielle: *skips over to little Adele* Hi, I'm Danielle. What's your name?

Adele, sitting with her legs in the W position, dropped her doll, startled. She quickly wiped away a tear, trying not to look sad as she looked up. "Adele." She answered. "I like your dress." She complimented her as her parents often reminded her to do. She hugged her ballerina doll tightly, nervous.

Danielle smiled. "Thanks. I like your dress too. You wanna play with me?"

Play...? With SOMEONE? Adele liked the sound of that... "Okay." She squeaked out offering Danielle her hand.

Danielle took her hand and took her to her house. "Daddy? I brought a new friend to play with."
"Aww, that's lovely, sweetie." Ratigan smiled at the tiny little girls. "What's your name, little lady?"

Adele hid beneath her mess of Champagne curls "Adele" She answered. "Adele Elise Black." She enjoyed saying her full name. "May I stay over to play, Mr. Dani's poppa?"

"Of course you may, little one." Ratigan smiled.
Danielle smiled and took Adele into her playroom.

"Thank you." She finally looked up and smiled, amber eyes twinkling with gratitude and excitement. Adele followed, ruffled skirt and curls bouncing as she scurried behind Dani. "Your poppa is nice. My mum doesn't let me have play dates at our house."

"How come?" Danielle asked as she set up her tea set.

"My mum says she's too busy to watch me and my baby sister and clean up after play dates." Adele explained. "Poppa works all week so he can only take me to the park to play on Sundays.... Poppa doesn't play tea party though. He doesn't play much at all..." She placed her doll in a chair. "Dolly always plays with me though and my sister will too when she's old enough." Adele forced a smile. Danielle wouldn't wat to play if she kept talking about sad stuff.

Danielle smiled. "Well, I'll play tea party with you." She set up three chairs. "Here, I have a chair for Dolly if she wants to join us."

"She would!" Adele scooted her doll in. "We love tea. She says you set a lovely table"

"Aww, thank you." Danielle pulled up a fourth chair. "Is it OK if Mortimer joins us?" She brought over a stuffed rabbit.

"The more the merrier, Mortimer." Adele shook the rabbit's paw. "You must be very lucky." She noted. "You have two rabbit's paws."

Danielle giggled. "Yeah." She poured the "tea." "How does Dolly take her tea?"

"Cream and two sugars." Adele answered. "Please." She said for her dolly in a squeaky voice

Danielle smiled and put in the "cream" and "sugars." "Here you go, Dolly." She smiled. "How do you like your tea, Adele?"

Adele took a sip. "It's delicious." She took the pot and pretended to pour Dani some tea. "Please, allow me."

Danielle smiled. "Thank you." She sipped her tea. "MMm, yum." She pushed a plate over to Adele. "Chocolate scone?"

"Sure" She pretended to take a bite. "Mmm best in London."

Danielle smiled as she served tea to her rabbit. "Mortimer is very picky. He only eats carrot scones." She handed him an invisible scone. "And they're really hard to make."

"We should all go carrot picking one day for fresh ingredients. Mortimer can show us where the best carrots grow." Adele suggested. "Then you and I can go apple picking!" She realized aloud. "Have you ever picked apples at the orchard?" She asked Dani curiously.

Danielle thought for a minute, then shook her head. "I don't think so. Daddy doesn't want me to go out too often, 'cause he says the sunlight will ruin my complexion...whatever that means."

"Oh... My mom says the same thing to me about swimming too long." Adele struggled to think as she pretended to scoop sugar in Danielle's tea. "If I pick some apples with my mom do you want me to bring a pie she bakes over? That way you can stay inside and we can enjoy the best part."

"OOh, yes please. I love apple pie." Danielle rubbed her belly.

"my mum always burns it but our maid makes great pies." Adele "would your daddy let you come over to my house sometime?

"I'm sure he would." Danielle smiled.
"That does sound lovely," Ratigan agreed.

Adele jumped, startled, bumping the table and knocking over several cups. "I'm sorry." She reset the table as quickly as she could. "Hi Mr. Ratigan." She accidently addressed him by the wrong title."

Ratigan smiled. "Hello, Adele dear." He knelt down and helped pick up the cups.
Danielle giggled and helped pick them up too. "Daddy, Adele and me are havin' a tea party. Wanna join us?"
"That sounds lovely." Ratigan sat in a tiny chair barely big enough for his rear end.

"You must be the first boy to ever go to a tea party." Adele said, looking at Ratigan in awe

Ratigan chuckled. "I'm sure I'm not." He picked up his cup. "May I have some tea, please, Dani?"
"OK, Daddy." Danielle poured some "tea" into her father's cup.

Adele's tail wagged, as she observed her new friend and her father together. "Prof. Dan's daddy, this is Dancing Della." She introduced her doll to him, holding her cloth hand out to shake. "She says you're a gentleman"

Ratigan chuckled and shook the doll's hand. "Very nice to meet you, Della. You're a lovely lady."
Danielle smiled. "Here, Daddy, have a scone." She gave him the plate.
"Why thank you." Ratigan took one of the scones and ate them.

"Prof...? What's a professor?" Adele asked, reaching for another scone.

"A professor is a teacher for adult students," Ratigan explained.

"Ohhh, like at a college?" Adele gasped. " That's amazing! My daddy went to law school. He's the first rat barrister to work at his firm." She said proudly.

"Is he?" Ratigan smiled. "That's very impressive."
"Yeah, it is," Danielle agreed. "OOh, looks like Della's tea is getting low." She poured more into the doll's cup.

"and I'm going to be the first rat prima ballerina one day...well, second. Della Dolly is the first. She dances like an angel." Adele held helped her doll take a sip. "Thank you, Prof "

Ratigan smiled. "You're quite welcome, dear."
"Daddy, d'you think I could be a prima ballerina too?" Danielle asked.
"Perhaps...though I wouldn't count on it, lovey." Ratigan smiled sadly. "You're a very talented girl, Danna Banana, but Mousedom is even harder on mouse-rat hybrids than they are on full-blooded rats...and that's saying something."

"I wish it didn't matter." Adele frowned. "The other mouse ballerinas at class make fun of me for being bigger and taller than them a lot. Not everyone, but some mice give my poppa are hard time for being a rat at the office. They criticize him harder he says... I think your great, part mouse or not." She said to Dani.

Danielle smiled. "Thanks, Adele." She gave her new friend a little hug.
Ratigan smiled and scooped both little girls onto his lap, snuggling them both. "I wish I could make life easier for you two, but the truth is, being a rat or even part rat in this world is going to be hard. Trust me; I've dealt with discrimination and hate my whole life. But maybe you girls can be the generation that stops all the nastiness."

"Yes we can." Danielle smiled, nuzzling against her father's belly, giggling as she heard it rumbling. "OOh, Daddy, your tummy sounds hungry."
Ratigan chuckled. "Indeed it is. Why don't I make us all some lunch?"

Danielle smiled and followed her father into the kitchen. "I'm hungry too."
Ratigan chuckled. "You're my daughter. When are you ever NOT hungry?"

Adele slapped him on the knee gently. "That's no way to speak to a lady, Prof. Dani's Daddy." She scolded him.

Ratigan chuckled. "Oh, you're right. My apologies." He got out bread for sandwiches. "What kind of sandwich would you like?"
"Peanut butter, please," Danielle chirped.

"Ooh, I'll have one of those too. I can set the table if you like." Adele offered.

"That would be wonderful, thank you, Adele." Ratigan showed her where the plates and napkins were. "Dani, you wanna help Adele set the table?"
"OK, Daddy." Danielle helped her friend set the table.
