They told him, the merchant and the hunchback, that it was a lucky coin, "a wishing coin" they said. So the man on the mountain humored them. He took his pouch and counted one, two, three gold pieces and exchanged them for but one piece, made of un unrecognisable metal, most probably worth little more than a rusted iron nugget of its weight.

And up the mountain he went, the hundreds of all familiar steps stretching seemingly forever above him. He held the coin in his right hand, the object cutting into his sweaty palm, making his way swiftly but patiently to the hut atop the rock.

The man on the mountain approached his home but did not enter. Instead he turned to the cliffside, hand outstretched over the edge of the deep dark fall, murmuring a wish.

He let the coin drop.
