Description From the view point with my mega lens. We could have gone to the arch, but the trail was over 7 miles round trip and it was really hot, so we didn't think the girls would like the hike.

such a scared place...i remember when that area from Moab to green River...was just having I-70 being built..and it was all red dirt roads everywhere 35 years ago !

I was just a scared ( spelled right this time ) teenager on a "quest" to find myself..and was all over Utah..and AZ and NM..and Cailifornia..the roads were much narrow then...and many old 1 lane metal bridges were on the back roads...I have a ton of old Kodachrome slides from that era..that were safely stored..and are still clean..and un-faded..I tried scanning a few..but a milkyness..exists..in the finished images...still though..in the days of film and Type R prints Cibachromes ( now Ilfochrome )..Kodachrome was KING !

Well you might as once the deep of winter settles in..there not much to do in the tundra here..so..I might start compiling a scan stack..of my best 40 images or so..I even have some 120 Jodachrome PKR film transparencies from the days I shot with a Pentax 6x7..for a living

I really liked Sodachrome ( LOL intentionally mispelled this time Jodachrome was a mistake..and Yodachrome..is a little guy lives in a swamp..on planet tattouine ..and is a Jedi master )..yes I do hope this year to post some fav old chromes from Marble canyon area northern arizona..and early works from Zion Nat park

Cheater! When I went out there, I made the hike (among others), shot a whole roll of film about an hour before the sun set, got back to the van to discover the the film didn't advance on the winder! 0 shots. I literally sprinted back to the arch (I was in good shape back then) to re-shoot. I don't know why I bothered, because the meter didn't work on my old Pentax Spotmatic SLR, so it was pure guesswork anyway I shall return...

dmlaird In reply to clfry [2006-09-18 13:21:23 +0000 UTC]

sorry... I will make the hike next time I guess, when the weather is cooler. The kids wouldn't have made it without whinning. Yeah, you would have to be in shape to sprint back 3 & 1/2 miles. Hope you ended up with some good shots.

Nope, not really, not worth the effort in returning. It was my first venture in photography, and with a meterless camera... you can imagine what good came of it It's okay though, I was was in Moab for mountainbiking anyway, not photogrphy.

Ahh the joys of a 500mm lens. I don't blame you. Seven miles in the heat is no fun.

I like how the clouds bring your eyes back into the frame of the arch

I've been there, I've been there, I've been there! I was in high school and we hiked all the way there one beautiful morning! Arches is one of my favourite places in the world. I was wondering why Mike didn't have a shot of Delicate Arch... I'm glad you have one. +fav

Thank you so much!

We didn't do alot of hiking....some but not alot. We went out to North and South and down Park (?) Avenue, and around Balanced rock. Other than that, it was way too hot. Maybe next time we will go in cooler weather to be able to enjoy more.

kristymariethomas In reply to dmlaird [2006-09-03 18:06:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, we always went in the spring for spring break. It's the perfect time - not too crowded, cool weather for hiking, not too many bugs, etc. I've heard that autumn is a good time too.

awesome capture and framing - and a 7 mile trek doesn't sound very appealing w/ no shade at least part of the way

Nope.... 7 miles with little to no shade isn't my idea of fun either..... not in this heat at least.
