For us earthlings, this is something very much like a flying horse. But for the Dioneyans, this is the same herbivorous Eptyphire like everyone else. These creatures live on flat terrain in large herds, combining even larger species of herbivores in the grazing group.
Helkarius is not the smartest beast. They are cowardly herd creatures that are highly dependent on each other, show aggression during the breeding season, and are very stubborn. So, what are they useful for?
For starters, they are comfortable to ride. Often, a thin wing membrane can be pierced in specific places without harming the creature, and a saddle can be put on it for riding. Helkariuses have outstanding endurance, and are one of those species that can fly to the top of the world without much harm to themselves. However, more often they are used simply to move through forests and carry out long-distance prospecting work. And their main feature is a good memory and running speed, since not many animals can catch up with the fleeing helkarius at least at half its speed. Helkariuses themselves perfectly remember all the routes they have ever traveled, as well as the smell of their master. Plus, they are guided by biological coordinates. They cannot be confused, and having taken off, they will always find their way home, and will soon find their owner. Therefore, stealing them is extremely unpopular.
One of the most fragile parts of the creature is its wings. Having received a wound in the membranes, Helkar will probably be able to rely only on his natural running speed, which, by the way, can play a role against large opponents. The very wound of the membranes is painless for the creature, and the membranes heal quickly, although with too frequent injuries or interference they lose this ability. (e.g. saddle and leg slots are not tightened!)
