Description A few days ago (early August), I visited Upstate, New York. More specifically, Bear Mountain and the Seven Lakes area. I regularly visit this place because I really enjoy the atmosphere. My father and I were just flopping around the woods and we came up on a small creek that we once saw as a stream.

This time of the year, it doesnt have much activity, but life down there still grows (especially damned mosquitos!). There were plenty of frogs, so I took the chance of going National Geographic on them. After looking at the pictures, I finally realized when a lens with Image Stabilization would've been handy. Nonetheless, I liked a lot of the pictures that I took

This one is one of my favorites. This frog was unusual. Other frogs forced me to use my 300mm lens in order to get a clear shot of them, but this one stood still enough to let me use my 50mm macro. I was really close to it in this shot. I have another one in which im even closer, but I'm saving those for later. At one time, it tried to touch it and adjust it for a better pose (the one that you see here). Maybe this frog was sick, or maybe it was just a model. Hence the name Dernier Cri, which means the latest fashion.

I used a Canon Digital Rebel, and this is exactly how the picture came out. No retouching whatsoever.

I like how you can almost see every dip and pore in its face. The colors and focus are nothing short of perfection.

I want to poke the bit of white flesh there on its hind leg... my eye keeps getting drawn to there.

You requested advanced critique but there isn't much I can say, hehe.

It's not requested, just "encouraged"

Plus, considering a lot of the comments, yours was pretty advanced

some frogs are just very tame and others you take one step within 10 feet of them and they will go scamper off. You were lucky and got one of the tamer ones I suppose Excellent find and beautiful shot gotta love froggies.

FROGGY! I love frogs, but I live in South Bend Indiana. There are only toads. And mosquitoes (and west nile virus) and spiders...and fleas. And sick raccoons. Lots of those. O.o

Gorgeous shot! i lurves it!

Beautiful capture. Love the composition, great colours...

Mmmm, warm and earthy.

Could've photoshopped the sharpness up a notch or two, otherwise very nice.

That's such a lovely picture! The colors are so... Earthy, for lack of a better word.

I noticed that when taking pictures of frogs, if you go up to them very slowly, they usually stay where they are.

Gorgeous shot, its filled with so much detail and clarity.... its unfathomable.

Advanced critique? Not much I can say there except composition; I'd have liked to see a little more of that right side, and I would have enjoyed a photo a little more decicive about its centering (I'd have gone with less centered), but other than that its pretty dead on.

My Diny! <3

I can always count on you for your woodland excursions. Did you notice the frog was foaming at the mouth

Anyways, wonderful shot. It takes a good amount of patience to capture animals, especially in thier habitat. I especially like the use of diagonals... it was a good framing technique which adds character to the posing frog. And there is a perfect blend of focus between the subject and the background which as you know can only be appreciated by a macro lense. Sweet shot.

Lovely shot, cant believe you got close enough to use a 50mm macro lense on it, any cropping on this shot?

The focal depth seems to be roughly at the head of the frog which is really effective with that little bit of tree in front and the shiny hue on his back.

This the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to soz [2005-08-16 17:10:54 +0000 UTC]

No cropping at all.

As for the lens, it is the Canon 50mm EF Compact Macro. It only goes down to 2.5 for aperture.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

soz In reply to dinyctis [2005-08-17 00:26:57 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I thought it might have been the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM or EF 50mm f/1.8 II and was curious cause im considering buying the f/1.8.

How does that lens perform for you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to soz [2005-08-17 00:38:54 +0000 UTC]

I rarely use this one except for close-up macro. Most of the time i use the 70-300mm when shooting macro and portraits. For the most part, my shooting situations dont require a lens that sports anything under 2.5.

Some might say that its autofocus is noisy as hell. I think it is, but i don't mind.

In all, I'm pretty satisfied

Very nice shot here Diny. So clean and crisp. I can see all the detail is his skin. The ever present "wetness" of a frog is clear. The aspect that drew me in was his eye, such a lovely almost inviting tone of amber.

Well done.

The colour in this piece is just exquisite. It is so rich you can almost taste it, so very raw and prehistoric. Like dripping sweat, instinct, passion. I don't even know if that makes sense. But that's what this picture makes me think of.
