My grandmother was German, and my mother's first language was German too (although since she was born in America, and has lived there for most of her life, she doesn't have an accent, but she can still speak it perfectly), so when I was little my mom would put on a bunch of German songs (regardless of the holiday) and would play it throughout the house...

One of my favorites was Kling Glöckchen...which is actually kind of funny when you think about the lyrics...

It's basically a man asking these children to let him into their house because he's stuck out in the snow...

I heard about the Boar's head carol. Wasn't it about this student who was attacked by a wild boar and in self defense shoved a book he was studying into the boar's mouth and choked it. Then he wanted his book back so he cut off the boar's head and brought it to college. or something

haha White Christmas... well, my friends and I used to play a game where you said inappropriate things after song titles, and I can never think of that song the same way again. 0_0

I love Ave Maria, especially because I started taking latin this year I can actually translate more from the actual words. And that version of Kling Glöckchen is so incredibly cute! I've been walking around the house singing it all day, and my parents are just rolling their eyes. I love german songs.

I grew up hearing Ava Maria in Mass at Christmas. We've sung others in Latin but only a handful of them. The rest are now sung in English today in Mass.

I also have heard of White Christmas. It was later made into a 1954 movie About that song, a few years back, there was a radio station in my hometown that was playing it and one man who is black called to complain. He thought it was racist XD (he didn't know it was about snow on Christmas Day XP)

dieingcity In reply to FrancescaKitty [2010-12-23 21:45:16 +0000 UTC]

oh my gracious - that is something i never knew before
i wonder how he could have mixed up the song about snow with
some kind of racist slur

i love ave maria and some of the latin songs sung at mass
i used to be catholic ^_^

FrancescaKitty In reply to dieingcity [2010-12-24 01:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, I live in a city where you see white people are in one group and black people are in another group out in public (I see it daily) >_> Yeah, there is still racism going on here. People who come here are always surprised at this... That's how the complaint came about

O really? I still attend Mass weekly.
