Description This is another one of those pieces where I tried to illustrate a character from a story idea I had that just never managed to get written. Very condensed version of the tale...

Idana was been born into a tribe in which both the 7th son of a 7th son, and the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter were considered to have been blessed by the gods. Such children were destined to become great spiritual leaders within their tribes. Idana was considered among her people to be doubly blessed by the gods, for she was the 7th daughter of parents who were in themselves a 7th daughter and a 7th son.

Idana's path in life was clear in the minds of her people....she however had very different ideas. Idana defied tradition and the wishes of her family, chieften and holy leaders by taking up the path of the warrior. Knowing no warrior among her tribe would train her, as it was believed that if a 7th chose a path of violence over a spiritual one, they would bring down a curse upon their people, Idana disguised herself as a young man and began to train with the young men of a neighboring tribe, learning the way of a warrior. When her deception was uncovered Idana was cast out from her people and exiled from their land. by exciling her, the people hoped to avoid the curse they believed she had called down upon them all through her betrayal of her sacred duty. She left her people and wandered the land, once more disguised as a man, and making her living as a guard and guide to travelers, finding teachers to continue her warriors training in the different lands she visited.

Some years later a tale reached Idana of a troubled country far from any of the lands she knew. The tale stated that some 60 years before, the rightful king and all his family had been murdered, and the king's cousin had taken the throne. The man had been a vicious and cruel leader, and now his grandson, a man even more vicious then his father or grandfather before him, stood poised to take the throne. The storyteller said that the people lived in terror, but that they had begun to have hope once more, for strange tales were being whispered on the winds....tales of a prophesy fortelling the return of a true king to the throne, a descendant of the last rightful king, whose line had not been completly extinguished after all. It was said that this young man would return to lead his people, but that the key to his success lay in the hands of a woman. A woman of foreign birth, an outcast from her own land, a wanderer, a warrior....the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter. Only with her help could the rightful king return to claim his throne.

(ok I know it was a crappy attempt to fit what would have been at least 3 short stories worth of plot and character development into a short version, but there it is)

Nice picture. The story sounds like it'd be great to read.

Maybe one day I will actually get the whole thing completed and maybe even post it here. I just have to find the time to sit down and work on it the way I need to. I have several stories that are just sitting around and have been for years in some cases, waiting to be completed. I am really bad about starting a project and then losing steam partway though and just never getting back to finish the task. Something I really need to change.

Familiar with the 7th son of 7th son. Not so much 7th daughter. Beautiful dark celtic piece.

The 7th daughter is something from a story I had started to write and never finished. In the storyline the both the 7th son of a 7th son and the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter were considered among their people to be special...children who were touched by the gods and destined to become the spiritual leaders of their tribes. But the woman in the story (whose father was a 7th son and whose mother was a 7th daughter) was one who broke with tradition, chosing to follow the path of the warrior, and was outcast from her people as a result. They believed that if a 7th chose a path of violance over that of peace, that their choice would bring the wrath of the gods onto the tribes.

Of course the truth was much different lol.

I thought maybe they were pretty similar. I picked up the 7th son story from a couple of centigenerians up in east TN while visiting some old family members there. They told stories of those called deviners. The women could read the soil to tell where to plant, or where to dig for water or coal. They said they could even read a woman and tell if her child was to be born healthy or not. Many also had a dictionary of homeopathic remedies in her head, most could hardly read or write. They made good stories and as ayoung kid you could almost feel the night creatures being somethin other than what they were.

Sounds like you got to hear some really amazing stories. It's funny how there are really so many different beliefs and tales of that sort all over the country, but most people don't realize that these things are a part of our cultural history.

You get those people who hear tales like the nes you heard and think the people who believed this things were just a bunch of "stupid supersticious freaks" (or worse), and fail to see just how important these beliefs and these women were to the people around them.

Ok I posted a rather poorly written version of the story concept behind this piece...and the others that will come along in the series eventually.

Blame all grammatical, typographical, and just plain moronic errors on a lack of sleep and a shortage of caffinated beverage lol

Thank you, and I guess that means I will have to put an explaination up lol. A lot of times I don't bother because I don't know if anyone actually reads them anyway or I am afraid there is such a thing as too much commentary on a piece.

I had downloaded a ton of stock over a year ago, and then due to a lack of time and a lack of a working computer, I never had a chance to do anything with them. So now I have started pulling out the old stock images, sorting through them and am trying to put them to use.
