This is so familiar. Thanks for capturing it. I wanted to buy one of those long-backed phones as a souvenir. Yes - you don't want to stand out in that crowd.

Why not shoot with a point'n'shoot then? I believe these are soundless. Or get a Leica :-P

erm, quality?

What, you're gonna see the difference when scalled down for the web?
No quality issue with Leica for sure, if that's your concern.

scaled down...
serisously, do you think i'm making photos only for deviantart? or just for the web???

second: i don't happen to have a leica.

third: for me, quality also includes sensitivity to light, RAW photos (for dark situations) and a narrow field of depht. and much much more factors that only an SLR can master.

I don't know what else are you planning to do with this type of street shots. I'm just commenting on what I see, which is a 750pix wide web picture.

You've written that it was scary to take this photo with a big camera, I've suggested some ways to avoid or minimise that in your future shooting.
MFT cameras, Voigtlander Bessas and tons of other small, quiet and unobstrusive gear that's perfect for street. MFT's image quality is comperable with APS-C size sensors; film cameras, when you know what you're doing, easily win with any DSLR's image quality.

Cheers.

I see. you were giving me advice for future pics like these. thanks for that!
but it's not like i mainly shoot these kind of pictures. all in all, i do not 'plan' to go look for some great scene in the subway anyway. it just happens, and i take a picture with the cam i got.
and as said, it's not just the "sensor" or "film" quality (i don't do analogue) that i value in my dslr, but also partly the big bulky obstrusive lenses i can attach to it, which give me the effects i want.
perhaps i will try out some of the mentioned cameras or other ones, but now i just don't have the money.

"believe me, it takes lotsa GUTS to take pictures in the train... I was so scared^^" haha tell me about it >< I did then the whole train glares at me giving me that "damn tourist" face. I then proceeded to look at my camera and tap it saying "damn camera" acting like it was an accident, like they knew what i was saying. now that i say this and think about it they must have thought i was crazy :3

well i don't know about this thing but i have heard that it really dangerous to look at people's face in the train in Japan....serious....is that true or just a rumor??? well nice pic you have got

denkyo In reply to verified-x [2010-01-29 12:12:59 +0000 UTC]

dangerous? no, why should it be? but it's true that it's something rude to do there. just the same here in Europe or America, though.

yes yes it does take a lot of guts to take photos on the train. and it hurts a bit inside that the man in the middle is rocking the double cell (texting himself no doubt) anyways, great photo!

jambi [2010-01-28 19:05:14 +0000 UTC]

Why does it take lots of guts? I always thought the Japanese would be more tolerant of such things than say, New Yorkers, even if its out of politeness and nothing more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

denkyo In reply to jambi [2010-01-28 19:09:57 +0000 UTC]

I am a respectful person and therefore feel some kind of shame when pulling things like that off. they wouldn't shout at me, no, but that's not the point. It just doesn't feel right, abusing their politeness.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jambi In reply to denkyo [2010-01-28 19:24:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. That's understandable. I would probably chicken out myself. With New Yorkers its like... "well, I might get yelled at for nothing at all so why not." har har

this one is very brave.

and the reason for the guy have 2 cell phones is obvious (since everyone is pointing it out). hes communicating, or rather computing, with the 2 people on the left and right of him, hence, he requires 2

i really like this one. Cell phones always amuse me. its funny, but as communication increases within technology, we become less defined with in our personality.our ability to talk face to face has dwindled.

hahahaha..MIDDLE GUY FOR THE WIN!!!

haha..its funny because here in the Philippines people tend to be like the middle guy..because in our country, telephone networks offer unlimited texting and calling in just a low cost! so people tend to have a number of phones..haha

great concept! i love how the guy stands out even with the black and white effect
