Very nice job, my only real issue is that I think it needs to have more weight to it.

I Very much Love this!
Yeah, I have heard animating takes a LOT, and I understand why~ xD
You did an awesome job with this!
Take care and hope you could make more of this and other dino creatures in the future!

Thank you.
Yes its a lot of work even for people with years of experience, but being a complete amateur with only a few attempts at some short gifs I find it very challenging

hmm yess the animation is fin... but maybe i'm being picky here when i say i don't like how the lines constantly shift position and weight.
it makes the whole thing look messier xp... i think that's just a preference though.
anyway yay dinosaurs! not easy to animate...

probably like that because each frame is hand drawn?Β

wolfenthusiast In reply to tympaniticus [2018-11-07 05:55:37 +0000 UTC]
even with hand drawn animation, you're still able to control the way they shift between each frame. i know how tweening works, and there is a possibility this artist decided to forego tweening some of the lines, and just freehanded them, for whatever reason. not a bad thing at all though.

a suggestion for the subtle tail movement!! in animals the tail typically moves side by side and only follow one leg, not both. So unlike the head that bounces with every step, the tail will move only with one of the feet.
So ultimately it would be...
Right foot: Head bounce,, tail
Left foot: Head bounce, ...
Right foot: Head bounce, tail
And so on
thats just a little thing that makes it seems a bit more organic!

dude this is turned out really cool
When I did animation classes I had to redo my animal walk cycle soo many times lol
I might try animating on firealpaca and see how that goes

How do you draw dinosaurs?
i find it hard because there really is no specific "reference" like living animals.
π: 0 β©: 2
DemonML In reply to Razzey [2018-09-14 03:16:15 +0000 UTC]
Its a lot of guesswork tbh, you really only have the bones and other artist's reconstructions to go off of, and even then you have to be careful with where you get the sources cause they could be outdated or just straight up wrong

Usually, skeletals are your best bet but you should check to see if they're accurate or not. I personally recommend Franoys and randomdinos

not sure on Suchomimus specifically, but Theropod dinosaurs of tetanurans clade tend to have stiff tails (which is what the clade name means) though the tip could possibly use a little bit more movement.

BurgerKingGhidorah In reply to TheDilophoraptor [2018-09-10 04:26:53 +0000 UTC]
indeed. though i blame the isle for making people think dinosaur tail tips are stiff as a stick...

TheDilophoraptor In reply to BurgerKingGhidorah [2018-09-10 12:40:22 +0000 UTC]
TI's tails have been fairly good in showing the stiffness of tails, some of the Dinosaur tails in the game may even be too wriggly?
π: 0 β©: 1
BurgerKingGhidorah In reply to TheDilophoraptor [2018-09-10 19:00:55 +0000 UTC]
I dunno. It just weirds me out. Like yes, they were made to support themselves, but you think theyβd tense up a bit when casually walking. Also, do you notice all their tail tips in TI have this... βnotchβ? Like, the tip of the tail is permanently bent downwards, and itβs really unnatural looking...
π: 0 β©: 1
TheDilophoraptor In reply to BurgerKingGhidorah [2018-09-10 19:24:45 +0000 UTC]
The bend might be more on the models part, though the muscle that goes down the length of the tail which may contract, it would still hold the tail fairly horizontal. The contraction for the tail muscles are mainly to pull the femur back, so the stiffened tail would work best the less it's curves in with the pull. Vertical movement in general isn't well supported with the way that reptile vertebrae connect together compared to mammalian vertebrae, especially those with as high of a profile as Dinosaurs.

BurgerKingGhidorah In reply to TheDilophoraptor [2018-09-10 21:28:53 +0000 UTC]
Probably the model, yeah. It just bugs me because the trail being like that, and theie general posture makes it look like theyβre animating a really well sculpted toy. But thatβs mostly gor the carnivores. The herbivores are spot on (even though gali and dryo have that dumb permanent bend in the tail...)
π: 0 β©: 1
TheDilophoraptor In reply to BurgerKingGhidorah [2018-09-10 21:36:02 +0000 UTC]
Gallimimus would actually fall under the Theropods with Sucho and others as part of the "Stiff Tailed" group, where Dryo and it's extended relative group (Shant and Para) actually have ossified tendons down their backs, which would cause stiffening as well.
I'd say the worst animation set in game currently probably belongs to the Stegosaurus though, since it's trying to fit the old compact model's animations onto the new, longer model. hope it gets reanimated soon.

BurgerKingGhidorah In reply to TheDilophoraptor [2018-09-11 02:16:08 +0000 UTC]
I still say the most fluid dinos had to be the original Allosaurus and the newest Utahraptor. they're feel very fluid, and even though their tails aren't super stiff, the flow and drag naturally with their run cycles. as for stego, I haven' checked new stego recently. is it that wonky?
π: 0 β©: 1
TheDilophoraptor In reply to BurgerKingGhidorah [2018-09-11 13:51:02 +0000 UTC]
the animations were made to fit a very short and stocky stegosaur model, but now it's super long, but the animations haven't changed between the two. it holds it's legs super close together and barely moves them compared to its body length. It kinda looks like it's standing on a circus ball actually.
