Description
In Irish folktale, there is a legend of a woman (supposedly a type of fairy or spirit) whose screams can be heard from across the countryside. Hearing her wails is a harbinger of one’s doom drawing near…
Based on the stories, the Banshee is said to either look like an old hag, or a young maiden. Lurking through the night, warning anyone who hears her wails of the near doom of their close loved ones…
According to John O’Brien’s dictionary:
"hence bean-síghe, plural mná-síghe, she-fairies or women-fairies, credulously supposed by the common people to be so affected to certain families that they are heard to sing mournful lamentations about their houses by night, whenever any of the family labours under a sickness which is to end by death, but no families which are not of an ancient & noble Stock, are believed to be honoured with this fairy privilege"…
