Description In Norse mythology, Ymir is a primeval being born of primordial elemental poison and the ancestor of all jötnar (giants). Ymir was born from the venom that dripped from the icy rivers and lived in the grassless void of Ginnungagap. Ymir birthed a male and female from the pits of his arms, and his legs together begat a six-headed being. three of his sons. the gods Odin, Vili, and Vé killed him and fashioned the Earth from his flesh, from his blood the ocean, from his bones the hills, from his hair the trees, from his brains the clouds, from his skull the heavens, and from his eyebrows the middle realm in which mankind lives, Midgard.

The writing in futhark runes is a passage from the Poetic Edda and translates roughly into:

Of old was the age
when Ymir lived
Sea nor cool waves
nor sand there were
Earth had not been
nor heaven above
But a yawning gap
and grass nowhere
