Amazing photo, and you know what? This is exactly how i have always pictured the setting for The Stand. Ambiguous, cloudy sky..

I love bay area skies.. tonight was an awesome sunset as usual.
Er, i'm not sure if Palo Alto is considered bay area but, same thing. I don't know why this road looks so cool right now, but you do it justice! heh.. the sillouette is nice too, it adds most of the character to the shot.

Oh that clouds! I mean... wow! that clouds...
I think that see a bit of sky (a heavy blue sky) will make the photo just perfect, but oh, well, mother nature is not perfect
About the technique stuff...
I think that the black thing disrupts a bit the landscape, but this is my opinion, I'll go for just the sky. But I understand that it gives some artistic asymmetry.
And I supose that the noise is because a high ISO, light doen't look perfect.
By the way, I still don't know what medium do you use, digital, analog?
Anyway, great photo

Hey there, thank you for the feedback!
I shoot entirely digital, Canon 10d. I read what you said, and though I definitely think that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, I will try and explain to you the thought process behind some of the things you mentioned.
A) About your comment on noise... noise is a negative term created by digital photographers. It should be differentiated from "grain", which has been used for centuries to establish a certain ruggedness in one's photos. In some of my photos I choose to add grain in post-processing and in some I choose not to... the original of this photo was grainless, but I much prefer the version that has a little bit of texture added by the grain. I think this goes a long way to explaining why my B&W shots do not look as "digital" as most digital B&W shots are... it's all about the grain.
I have an 8x12 print of this photo which I have recently entered into a photo competition; we'll see how it does! In my opinion, the fine grain in the 8x12 photo really helps put the image together. And I make a very definite distinction between noise and grain.
B) The necessity of the silhouette. The silhouette for me, makes the shot. Otherwise, I am really taking a picture of clouds. How can I set myself apart from other photographers, who also have access to beautiful clouds? I think the silhouette is as important as anything else in the shot, but that's just my opinion. The birds are a key element in the photo, because I wanted the photo to convey a sense of loneliness and desperation, a la Stephen King's The Stand.
Thanks again for the feedback, I hope I can help clarify my thoughts on some of the things you have mentioned .

Oh...
Sorry, a little misunderstanding here I obviously was talking about grain, not the noise. Just a traslation mess.
Yeah, in many photos grain makes them look so much better, but personaly I go for a clean & soft shoot. Maybe because I'm short-sighted, so I like to see with definition But I know that in future shoots I'll probably add grain, it's just that for the landscapes I preffer a "clean" image. And good look with the competition! You know that photo mags also have many contests? ...with interesting prizes
About the siluete, for me it's ok. As you say the photo wolnd't be same without it. But (again) I'll go for that amazing clouds more than for the whole scenery. I supose that I must read the Stephen King's novel to understand it Is it an interesting reading? Now I'm free of books so...
Anyway, the photo is great, no doubts about it.
Good look with the exams by the way (because you're are in final exams, aren't you? )

This is the kind of photograph you have to appreciate in person. I can tell that there is far more depth in this image than my computer screen is allowing me to see.
