Description This is a character I'm currently playing in a 5e DnD campaign. Gerhardt (pronounced GAIR-hardt) is a gnoll who never knew his parents/pack, growing up alone in a swamp populated by lizardfolk clans. Gerhardt survived by hunting/foraging and trading his services to the lizardfolk for basic needs when need be, and that survival was all he knew in life, really. He got his scars (including the one exposing his teeth) from a jungle cat which attacked him while he slept on one occasion, and he harbors a fear of cats as a result.

Gerhardt is an imposing creature, 7'4" (hunched over) and rippling with muscle. He is, however, an incredibly cautious, even cowardly, character. He expects prejudice everywhere he goes, and would rather run than fight in most cases. He can be blunt and oblivious at times, and has no qualms about pounding prey or enemies to mush with his flail, though he's a pretty gentle soul at heart. He knows a ridiculous number of languages (7 including common), though he speaks haltingly with broken grammar when he speaks at all. He was true neutral in alignment, which I played much like how the true neutrality of an animal is described: Gerhardt was concerned almost exclusively with survival, and never let those concerns be swayed by ethics, nor were they ever influenced by cruelty or altruism (although he did have a pack bond with the party, and would go out of his way to help or aid them).

He's sorta a sadboi lol, but I hope for him to come out of his shell somewhat during the campaign.

Edit: so the campaign I played Gerhardt in ended, here's what happened in case anyone is curious: Gerhardt joined a ranger's guild and was paired with a tabaxi mentor who was also a werewolf (which was more of a boon than a curse in the GM's world, as you could transform at will and generally remain in control, though the full moon still forcibly transformed you and you were prone to bouts of violence or aggression even when not transformed) named Dave. They initially got off on the wrong foot, as Gerhardt was instinctively afraid of Dave due to his fear of cats and rarely even spoke to him, which irritated Dave. They eventually found common ground and got past this, however, and even entered a romantic relationship, which inevitably infected Gerhardt with lycanthropy as well. Gerhardt and the rest of the party ended up joining a famous group of thieves based out of an airship, and became recognized through their exploits, rising through their ranks. This success plus the lycanthropy infection and loving boyfriend was increasing Gerhardt's confidence, making him more decisive but also more aggressive. He had no qualms about killing, and found that he actually quite enjoyed it while in werewolf form, something that was unwittingly encouraged by Dave, who'd revealed to Gerhardt that he would sometimes hunt and eat people in werewolf form essentially for sport; Dave had seemed somewhat ashamed about this, but Gerhardt's only misgivings at the time were the possibility of being caught or hunted down. So basically, he was kinda drifting evil when the campaign ended lol. I feel like he could (and probably would) have been put on a better path by the largely good party and/or the DM, but he probably would've shocked the party once or twice before that haha.

I love this game X3
