Description A little grayscale action. This one's got some surprises in it if you really look around. These are giants by the way, not ogres.

Wow, I'd love to see this one colored. Do you start a lot of your projects out in grayscale? I sometimes desaturate what I'm working on to simplify things and give me a better look at what I'm working on, but I haven't ever actually made a whole painting that way to start with.

I actually tried a bunch of color studies on this one but they all seemed to gray the image out. Just couldn't find one better than I liked the grayscale.
As for how I start out, it's about 60% percent of the time grayscale, 30% of the time straight to color, and 10% is both combined. I've been going back and forth a lot lately between blocking and line drawings these days as well. I've got a fairly detailed line drawing in the works right now that I'm considering posting in here along with its painted version.
It helps to take something to gray because it eliminates the distracting colors and really lets you see the forms along with light and shadows better. You should try it!

The 'surprises' are all quite morbid ! My absolute favorite section of this is the people in the cage. You did a keen job on the firelight!

There's a wonderful, lumpy sense of physicality to the giants and their acoutrements! It's interesting to see your stuff in grayscale--it draws my attention to factors I might otherwise overlook, like your really nuanced sense of value.

Thank you very much. I did want them to be a little dopey, especially the one sitting down (he's the slow one in the group). As for the grayscale, every once in a while, I'll try to achieve color with values only. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. In this case, turned out okay.

Nice man, their scale and features really show they are giants, real neanderthal-ish. Im sure ppl will get confused anyways, colors will really help on that though i'd think.

Thank you. People do get confused easily don't they? I started a color version and may finish it. Wasn't quite going my way at the time.

Yw, yeah its common i suppose if one is unfamiliar with the mythology/fantasy aspect of character, it can get confusing. Hmm maybe some wiki info along with your post, justa suggestion. I'd like to see a colored version if you decided on it for sure.
