Takes place in Winter during Onni's Friedensfest.
One day Vent will learn not to run up to strangers but today is not that day lol.
+------+------+
Apparently, at some point, he had fallen asleep.
The day had been eventful; he had gotten separated from Hela and Ragfuss, met that charming stranger, reunited with Dew, talked to Duston and his friend Riker, played tug of war with that painted female Wisp, played with that sweet pup, chased around his packmates, and-
-and at some point, while waiting for his siblings near Onni's border, he had dozed off. How he had managed to do that in the cold was amazing; somehow, despite how not used to the chill he was, the snow didn't bother him. Was it because the white powder was soft, in a strange way? That could be it. All it took was a long exhale, a moment to settle down, and his body succumbed to the pleasant decline of luxurious sleep.
His siblings would be able to find him, easy. There were pawprints to follow, and his brown body was more than obvious in the middle of a small clearing.
Happy with that thought, it didn't occur to Manning that his siblings wouldn't be the only ones who could have found him.
Weight and the sensation of paws, and claws, came down hard on his tail. Wrenched from his dreams, Manning's eyes flashed open. As his body reacted to suddenly needed to listen to his waking mind, there was a short moment when he was motionless. Frozen. At the mercy of whatever had dropped down onto his tail. A few seconds later, however, he was on his feet, his height pulling his tail out of what felt like a mouth, with sharp teeth--
He almost called for his siblings, his packmates. His mouth had been open, ready to yell for... for someone.
However, when he turned to look at the assailant, he saw... a puppy?
A small, dark coated, brown and gray puppy.
Dumbfounded, the Asgardian stood still as the puppy pulled herself out of the snow she had fallen into. In that tiny maw, some fur fell out, and she spit out the rest- brown and gray fur, too stringy to have come from her form. Had it been her who had gone after his tail? A quick glance around showed there wasn't anyone else nearby. Sure, he could hear plenty of other creatures, but it was just he and the puppy in this clearing.
Since he had seen puppies come with that one mysterious pack earlier, Manning wasn't surprised to see one had found him. However, he was stunned that one had sought out him as some sort of... play thing? Or had they tried to attack him?
...Nah. They looked too cheerful to have attacked him, with their bright eyes and entertained countenance. There wasn't any reason to yell out, either. So he plopped down in the snow, sitting down in front of his newfound companion, and gave her a sleepy but genuine smile.
"You startled me, little one!" What a relief! "You really shouldn't go around, biting others' tails like that~" He laughed as he gently bumped her shoulder with his paw. In response, she lifted a dark paw and smacked back. He liked her spunk. Gently, he tapped her back- and in return, she sat up onto her hind legs, and used both forepaws to shove his paw away. However, she stayed upright, her tail wagging, her paws twitching as if she wanted to do more. With her mouth still open in a toothy grin, she stared up at him, expectantly.
Was this some kind of a game? To test this thought, Manning used his opposite forepaw, and flicked the puppy's ear. She opened her mouth wide, then she was suddenly smacking at her new opponent - the paw - as eagerly as she had before. So.. That was a good thing, right? She still seemed fine, and pretty upbeat, despite whatever that strange expression was.
He tapped her other ear, the opposite side of her face, the tip of her nose, and even, at one point, reached around her to gently run his claws through the fur on her tail. It was gentle, worthy revenge, right? It was fun, too- so fun the little one stood almost upright on her back feet and threw herself with renewed vigor into the game. Her tail wagged and shook her body at the same time, which made her rapid, fox-like pounces at his retreating paws all the more adorable. So Manning let the game continue. He stood up, and once on all four feet, he began to rapidly back away. As he retreated, he would lift one foot dramatically high, encouraging the pup to leap for it; then, he would hop back, put that foot on the ground, and sneak a tap in with his other leg. This continued for a few strides, until, with a smirk, Manning decided to jump over the pup.
Distance wasn't between them for long, though! Soon, Manning found himself being chased by the little devil, who was determined to go for his back paws or hips- whichever was closer to her at the time. Manning darted, zigged, zagged, juked, he did all of those rapid moves only a playful, racing canid could pull off. The puppy was a little slower, a little less graceful, but she was of the age where her coordination was coming in; she began to predict his movements. She didn't fall for every quick jerk, for every double-back...
...and, eventually, she got her little mouth right back around his tail. Not wanting to hurt himself, Manning skid to a stop at the feeling. However, in good humor, he inhaled a quick gasp, lifted a paw to his sternum, and let himself collapse into the snow. She had caught him, the little rascal! She had won. She tugged and smacked at his tail, perfectly content to be given permission to do what she had done in the first place.
As Manning caught his breath, he lifted his head to glance back at his little friend. Before he could speak to her again, however, a sight caught his attention in the hills behind her;
The silhouettes of his siblings. Based on their body language and distant expressions - meaning, he couldn't see as much detail on them as he'd like because they were far away - it may be time to leave the Fest for good. There was a brief sadness in Manning's heart, but it was quickly shoved away. Apparently, this Fest happened every year.
He would see everyone again. Even if it took a while.
"I'm sorry, but I need to go home now," He explained as he came to his feet, and gently tugged his tail out of the puppy's grasp. She looked grumpy for a moment, the expression vivid and oddly adorable. He smiled down at her. "I'm sorry. But we can play again, if I ever see you somewhere else, okay?" To that, she nodded, her tongue sticking out of her mouth somewhat. Yeah, he definitely liked her!
"Now, you go find someone else to play with, okay?" With one paw, Manning pointed in the direction he could hear multiple voices in. Surely, someone within that group could take care of the pup... or, maybe her parents were there. There were so many wolves, it was no telling who she was the daughter of.
With a huff, the puppy started to walk away, toward the group- but as soon Manning turned his back, she darted in another direction, her tail wagging as she looked for something else to explore.
