He originally planned to be a Doctor but his whole life changed after he met Captain Rum. he didn't have much of a choice; live a life on the sea or drown beneath the waves?

In his older years he's somewhat content with where he is now? He looks after the crew and takes their health and well-being very seriously. He's even developed a respect for Rum, but there's still some resentment there.
