I'm guessing they might have made him white because they wanted to avoid unfortunate implications what with Bender being a petty crook. Maybe they were worried about a backlash? oo

Maybe. However, the problem is that they already implied a race with the character by giving him the last name 'Rodriguez'. I believe he even states being from Mexico at one point as well.

I believe it's every fan's duty to fix the mistake that was white blonde Bender. When you truly love something, you can't allow it it to keep hurting itself in horrible terrible devastating ways. 

That said, I really am glad you like the design!

I THINK the reason they made Bender white and blonde was a reference to John DiMaggio? (Though it's kinda hard to tell with the show's style.) But yeeeah... 'Rodriguez' does not say 'white guy' to me. So that needed to change. THAT SAID, thank you for the compliment! The shades, oddly enough, really fit with his original design. Bender too swag to look like all the normal meatbags.

As I told somebody else, i think the reason for that was because they were referencing John DiMaggio-- Bender's voice actor. That said... that wasn't what bothered me. I just thought it was very unsettling to give him the last name Rodriguez and then make him... Not Hispanic. He, in the show, would already count as a minority from being a robot-- it just would have just made sense to see that translated into being a person of color.
