Leo sniffled softly as he sat on the bench. He didn’t like the other kids in his class, and they scared him quite frankly. He sat in silence as he watched the other kids giggle and make snow angels. Leo never liked those things anyway and was as content as one could be on a cold bench without a scarf to cover his face. The cold wind bit his nose relentlessly and he hid his face further into his jacket, but it didn’t do much for the rest of his face, his eyes, or his ears. His tears were the only thing that kept his face even remotely warm. So he stayed there, huddled up, trying to fit his entire body into his fluffy coat.
Soojung didn’t like the other girls in her class. All they ever wanted to play was House and dream about once one of the cute boys in their class would be their husbands. The girl’s chased after the boys relentlessly, but the boys were no better and they encouraged the girls to fight over who was going to marry who. Soojung hated the drama of it all and looked for a place on the playground where no one was. As she scanned the playground she saw what looked like a little marshmallow. She shuffled over to the bench and sat down next to the little boy. He looks up for a second, but then closes his eyes again as some snowflakes rest on his eyelashes. Krystal liked the quiet demeanor of the boy. She gently touched his raw cheek and wrapped her scarf around him. She liked the cold any way; she could take it for a few more minutes if it meant that he’d feel warmer. Leo looks up as he notices that his cheeks are suddenly warmer.
“Hi.” Soojung smiles softly. Leo just nods quietly, rubbing his nose into the warm scarf. “I’m Soojung, but I like Krystal better.” She sees him quietly mouth “Krystal” to himself and nods again. He does a little eye smile that makes Krystal’s heart do a little flip in her chest. “Aren’t you going to tell me your name?”
“Taekwoon… but I like Leo.” He mumbles, barely audible, but just enough for Krystal to hear.
“Leo… it’s nice.” She smiles “Are you okay?” Leo nods, and Krystal sees him smile before he pulls the scarf over his cheeks again. “Are you cold?”
“No I’m fine.” Leo says, muffled by the scarf. The teacher yells for the kids to come in and Krystal notices Leo doesn’t have gloves either.
“Here, I can help.” Krystal says, taking off her gloves and takes the scarf off his neck and wraps it around his head. He blushes softly as best his red cheeks can show. “There so you know for next time.”
“Thank you Krys.”
“Krys?” Krystal blushes hard. Leo smiles as wide as his face will let him and nods.
“I like Krys…”
“Do you want to be my friend Krys?”
“Yes.” Krystal smiles wide, breaking into a giggle.
“What’s so funny?”
“You’re cute.” Krystal laughs, and holds Leo’s cold hand “Of course I’ll be your friend.”
“Thank you.” Leo whispers and holds her hand as they walk back in to the school
