The crown of thorns is a symbol of sin and impurity which is what Mikhail is because he fell from his grace long ago. Is more of a symbolical meaning type of thing while being a cool pic. Of course he did not wear a crown of thorns before but the pic is to just illustrate how within his white there is darkness. to why the pic is black and white.

And yes, Jesus did wear the crown, which reflected the sins of men and their filth etc and since Mikhail is wearing it it represents his own hidden filth within his beauty.
