This is the first piece in a series of works I'm making based on the stories by Lovecraft (I just reread all of his stories). This first piece is kind of a tryout to see what kinda feel I wanted the images to have. I couldn't really categorize it since the Shoggoth itself is 3d but I did a lot of post stuff in Photoshop, like the overlaying texture which is actually a piece of bandage which I glued to some cardboard, painted and then scanned, I did that to give it a bit of authentic feel. My next piece will be based on the story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" where I'll use this same shoggoth model in a different way.All images/photography/scans/3d by me - no stock used

Awesome, I too just read the big tome of all of Lovecraft's fiction. Β Will give it another round in a year or so. Β Can't beat it!

This is a lovely piece but does not in any way resemble the shoggoths as they are described by Lovecraft (which is more like a vast amoeba):
It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway trainβa shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter.

Perhaps the fact that you can't categorize it is good. I mean, lovecraft's creatures can't really be locked into one area of the animal kingdom

I am a big fan of Lovecraft. I was really bummed when I tried to google some pictures of some of the creatures and there were hardly any serious ones. I am relieved that SOMEONE took it upon themselves to make a decent picture.

Personally, not quite how the Shoggoth is described in At the Mountains of Madness, but really who cares? To each his own! XD And this is pretty damn amazing, I'm LOVING "his" "eyes"!!

That's a nice portrayal of shoggoth, good use of textures and sepiatones. Lovecraft really has a strong pull on the imagination.
I keep coming back to his mythos myself.

I just finished reading "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" as well (I got a collection of Lovecraft fiction for my bday).
Amazing work. Your art definitely makes use of the twisted imagery Lovecraft evokes in Mountains of Madness. The story itself was a great and terrifying concept; one of my favorites.
