Description What Is This?
I was asked by many about my musical influences when making stamps and asked to share some of the stories behind the concerts I have seen. I have been to 1200+ live concerts (all national touring bands/singers with albums, not local club bands or tribute/cover bands, have seen plenty of those too) and have saved every ticket stub and backstage pass (when I had one) and kept notes (like a journal) on every show I have ever seen. So from time to time I will scan in the ticket stub from a show I saw (going in no order, skipping around) and talk a little about the show and my opinion. All information property of dA--stamps/dA--bogeyman (me). This is entry#26.

The Concert:
David Bowie
Phoebe Legere (Opening Act)
July 7, 1990
Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), Saratoga Springs, New York (USA)

Just So You Know:
David Bowie was on tour to support his 'Sound + Vision' album ("Sound + Vision 1990 World Tour"). Bowie's lead guitarist and musical director on this tour was Adrian Belew (who released his own fifth solo album 'Young Lions' while on this tour, Adrian Belew is a member of the band King Crimson). Many David Bowie live videos and live radio shows would be recorded on this tour. Opening act multi-format artist Phoebe Legere had recently posed in Playboy and had stared in two Toxic Avenger movies and had a cult following at the time.

Personal:
I had been a big David Bowie fan growing up and always wanted to see him in concert. A few years earlier (1987) I had tickets to see him but a family member passed away and I could not go and gave my tickets to friends. David Bowie had stared as "Goblin King Jareth" in the movie LABYRINTH a few years before (1986) and this is one of my all-time favorite movies. So needless to say when the concert was announced in 1990 there was nothing that was going to hold me back from seeing him LOL. I went with my then girlfriend Kathy, my friend Mitch and his girlfriend Cathy (yes I know two Kathy's but they spelled their names differently LOL). We went to SPAC early and had a picnic style dinner before the show - pleasant company and a nice dinner - we were all pumped up for this concert. My friend Mitch tape recorded this live David Bowie show and later pressed it to CD, I have a copy and listen to this show often.

The Live Concert (Opener):
Flamboyant super hot Phoebe Legere opened the show and what a perfect opening act for a David Bowie concert. She came out wearing a plastic see-thru dress that showed her whole body (she wore bra and panties under dress) and had long blonde hair that waved around when she pronounced around the stage. I was not familiar with any of her music but it didn't matter, we were all up cheering and dancing as she performed. Seemed the guys were more into her set then the girls (duh!) and she sang for around a half hour. The last song she did was called "Marilyn Monroe", that song stuck in my mind because the main chorus just keeps repeating the name Marilyn Monroe like twenty times LOL. Anyway it was a very spirited amusing set and did I mention how hot Phoebe Legere was? LOL Okay so much for the foreplay of the show LOL. I will add that Lady Gaga saw Phoebe Legere many times before perfecting her own act (which is very similar).

The Live Concert (Headliner):
Finally David Bowie. There were large video screens set-up all over the place - in back of the stage, side of the stage, back near the concession stands, I mean everywhere LOL The lights went out and you heard the guitar into and David Bowie's voice singing slowly "Ground control to Major Tom" - opened with "Space Oddity" and of course the crowd went crazy. Adrian Belew was spectacular throughout the whole night on lead guitar and sang a song from his own new album ("Pretty Pink Rose", which was sung on his album with David Bowie so they sang it together live). The great thing about seeing David Bowie live is that you are going to know every song and he has such a strong presence on stage that he commands your attention while performing. Songs I enjoyed hearing that night (in no specific order) were "Space Oddity", "Heroes", "Rebel Rebel", "Modern Love", "Changes", "Suffragette City", "China Girl", "Blue Jean", "Starman", "Fame", "White Light/White Heat" (Velvet Underground cover), "Golden Years", "Fashion", "Life On Mars", "Let's Dance", "Jean Genie", "Ziggy Stardust", "Young Americans", "Heartbreak Hotel" (Elvis Presley cover) and "Ashes To Ashes". There was a wonderful light and video show going on (futuristic feel to the whole show) on every song played (sometimes the video screens would show clips from Bowie's videos, band members as they performed on stage or old news clips that were appropriate for the song subject matter). David Bowie played for approximately two hours and forty minutes total (two sets with a 15-20 minute break in between sets). Bowie was very energetic dancing to most songs as he sang them and the crowd ate it up and loved the whole show as did I. David Bowie just defines the term "rock star" in every way and his live concert was an amazing event. Sadly David Bowie has passed away and I was very lucky to see him live. Dance The Magic Dance!
