Rendering honors to an old adversary of the United States Navy. Here lies Admiral of the Imperial Fleet, Chuichi Nagumo. The commander of the Pearl Harbor strike force. Commander of Japanese mobile carrier forces at Midway. Commander of the Japanese mobile fleet at Guadalcanal. Admiral Nagumo met his end on Saipan in 1943 and was returned to Japan by the United States Marines for interment at Engaku-ji near Kamakura. Drank a beer to him and left a card from myself and the crew of the USS Midway (CV-41). Admiral Nagumo is buried with his eldest son Shioji who died on Guadalcanal.
