I got a really nice travel tripod right before that trip that has been invaluable ever since. I have been to classes, read forums, etc that all recommend these HUGE heavy "sturdy" tripods, and I know friends that have them, and they NEVER bring them with them anywhere. My tripod is awesome in that it fits in just about everything and isn't horribly heavy.
That said, most stacking software can handle handheld HDR pictures, so the ONLY time I use my tripod is for nighttime pictures. Even so, I often lug around my tripod and never use it, so its always a tough call when to bring it. I also have a JOBY Gorillapod that I wish I had brought sometimes instead of my travel tripod because it is so light and you often have a railing/stone/wall etc that you can use.
Depending on the weight of your camera, you can get super cheap and light aluminum tripods for like $15, just don't expect one to hold a pro dslr and a pro telephoto lens.

Bus lights ? well done for catching the light on the clock, it is readable

Yeah, I think mostly a bus, plus maybe a car or so, it's been long enough that I don't remember exactly

It looks like you needed a tripod? This was like the only picture I used my tripod for on the whole trip 
If you had a tripod you could have lowered the ISO and aperture to get a but deeper depth of field and then slowed the shutter speed to more light trials instead of a bus trail? But that may have been what you were going for? In any case, the tripod would have helped

i say you're probably spot on with that advice but i took that shot with my 3yr old crappy digital point 'n' shoot just on an impulse, while walking and holding my wife's hand. didn't have time to set anything up haha! You have great work though all around, keep it up
