In this case, the background was a photo (i can't remember which one it exactly was; i took one that closely resembled the background of the music video "Closer" by Trent Reznor, which this animation is a direct homage to). Some brushes and textures were added in other layers to get this vintage effect - and that's about it

Thanks for the speedy response, Culpeo! Do you have a recommended brush and texture list I can play around with or did you make the brush patterns and textures yourself? Which programs do you use?

I've just joined DeviantArt a week ago and I'm starting to submit artworks but you can definitely see I'm new to using software lol. I'm better with graphite pencils. But I want to learn!

Truth be told, the only brushes i used are the default ones in Adobe Photoshop (yes, i actually am that lazy and boring ), which is the exact program that i use for everything digital (paintings and gifs).

Nothing wrong with graphic pencils! In fact, i always remind people to get started with traditional stuff FIRST and step into the digital field afterwards. There is nothing more tragic than artists, who know Photoshop and Corel Draw in and out and make digital masterpieces, but turn out completely helpless when given a pencil and piece of paper.

I'm actually working on a sketch now with graphite pencils! I'd love to show you once it's done? 

I cant get used to my drawing tablet if I'm being honest. I don't know if it's the pen sensitivity not being strong enough or what. Maybe I'm not using the correct stroke brush thickness on Photoshop? 

And no you aren't boring at all!  If anything, I've never seen a style like yours. It's unique and it encourages me more to find my own style.

I can gladly take a look at it when i find the time.

I remember having massive problems using a graphic tablet for the first time as well. Though it had nothing to do with the brush thickness but the coordination between eyes and hand (i just couldn't get used to the fact that my eyes were looking at one spot and the hand drew on another - that just messed up my brain haha). Then, i quickly changed to a Wacom Cintiq, where you directly draw on the screen like you would on paper and now i'm so spoiled that i could never return to a regular tablet again.

Yup that will mean a lot to me if you had a look at it! The sketch is almost done so I want to jump to this next question; when you do traditional sketches or portraits, do you just scan it and upload or is there a professional way to do it like working on it in Photoshop or some program to tidy it up? I know graphite doesn't scan as well as fine liners.

I'm about to start my first background for an animation assignment; the walking man! Would love to show you that too
