Description                                           The Moon and the Sea
                                                Jessica Varela

Many years ago, one half of the world was bathed in bright light from the golden sun, while the other thrived in the dim, silvery rays of the gorgeous moon. The sun, Sol, ruled over the dry southern half of the world, thus the existence of deserts, where as the existence of the moon, Luna, embraced the northern half of the world in a chilly, dimly lit embrace which brought about the existence of snow. One day the moon grew lonely, and she sparked a conversation with the raging sea. The sea, Mare, responded to Luna in excitement, and from that day forward, the moon and the sea conversed at the same time every night and became well acquainted with one another.  One evening, Mare requested Luna to sing to him, but she immediately refused him. With whispered sweet nothings, the sea convinced the moon to sing for him. When she did, Mare fell in love with her and began to sway gently to her music. From the moon’s sweet melody and the sea’s infatuation with the moon, the tide was created.

After many days of melody and conversation, the love between Mare and Luna, was obvious. Sol, who ruled alone with no company, grew jealous of the love that moon and the sea shared. He loved Luna as well, and if he wasn’t happy, then they couldn’t be happy either. Demanding that the two separated, Sol divided the time Luna had with the sea in two, thus the rise and fall of the sun each day. Mare, who fell into deep despair due to the allotted time he was allowed to spend with Luna, began reaching towards the sky in the mid-day heat, asking Sol to bring her back, however the sun scoffed and denied the sea access to the moon until night fall.
