Yevgeny Ivanov, naval attaché of the Soviet Union in Great Britain. Ruzenkov (Roshchin), military attaché in Shanghai in 1946. Ivan Mikhailovich Smirnov, military attaché in Austria in 1945-1948, military attaché to the Soviet Embassy in the United States.
From the fall of 1940, intelligence departments of the border districts regularly reported about the concentration of German troops on the Soviet border. Employees of secret intelligence tried to find out Hitler's plans.
The dates of the German attack on the USSR were called very different. First, the war was "promised" in March-April 1941. Then - in the summer of the same year, but only after Berlin would force London to capitulate. From mid-May 1941, it was reported that the war would not begin until the summer of 1942. The situation was complicated by the fact that only one man - Adolf Hitler - knew the exact date the war would begin.
He signed the order to attack the USSR only on June 10, 1941, just twelve days before the start of the German offensive.
Since June 18, 1941, from scouts in Moscow began to receive information that the Germans are deploying an army to strike. It became clear that we are not talking about weeks, but days. But until now, Soviet military intelligence has not been able to obtain a single document confirming the German plans.
June 21, 1941. Moscow. The fast train "Berlin - Moscow" arrived on the platform of the Belorussky railway station in the evening. The naval attaché of the Soviet Embassy in Berlin Mikhail Vorontsov came down the stairs of the sleeping car with a briefcase. On June 19, an urgent telegram from the country's leadership summoned the military diplomat to Moscow. Taking advantage of the opportunity, he was given all the reports written over the past few days and documents received.
He was met by an employee of the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs accompanied by two NKVD officers. A government car was waiting for them on the station square. Vorontsov was put on the back seat between two "convoyers".
Vorontsov Mikhail Alexandrovich. Participant of the Civil War. Graduated from the Naval Academy, after which he was sent to the Far East. In 1939 - Deputy Chief of Staff of the Pacific Fleet. Then sent to Germany as a naval attaché.
The chauffeur slowed down at the gates of the Spasskaya Tower... Ten minutes later, Mikhail Vorontsov entered Stalin's office. Among the documents that he brought from Berlin, the most important was a copy received from the naval attaché of Sweden. The document was titled: "Official request from Berlin on the routes of Swedish ships and aircraft in the Baltic Sea from June 22, 1941 to prevent an attack on them during the war with the USSR"......
The document brought by Vorontsov from Berlin confirmed the information received - war was on the threshold. Vorontsov did not know that in a few weeks he would be appointed deputy chief of the Navy Intelligence Department, and from September 1941 to 1952 he would hold the post of chief of naval intelligence of the USSR. Nor did he know that in a few hours Soviet military intelligence would be, as they say, "blinded and stunned" by the enemy, and all its work would have to be organized virtually anew.
