Description
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it.."
(Matthew 16:17-18)
Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
(Matthew 16:23)

Cool. Jesus renames Simon to 'rock' (Peter / Petro / Cephas, just different translations, but the intended meaning of the name is 'rock'). He gets a new name and is basically assigned a new purpose! Many people have even believed that this means Jesus set up the Catholic church because Peter was likely their founder. But the wording is a little confusing because when you put 'build' + 'church' together it suddenly seems like it's a building or physical location. And yet the word 'church' means 'gathering'.
Regardless of what he meant Peter to be, a couple of verses later he calls this new 'rock' a 'stumbling-block'. And even calls him something as harsh as 'Satan'. He just set up his disciple as the start point of the timeless gathering of God's people and now he's saying 'you don't think about God, you think about men'...
What's in a name? We can't take pride or confidence in things like our name, church denomination or leadership position. In a moment it could all mean nothing and we'd be trying to please men rather than God.. and be seen as evil in God's eyes!
