That is an interesting harbour. Is the canting basin really shallower than the quaysides? (question based on water colours observed in Bing Maps Aerial view)

Yes I would say so. I have reviewed my photographs and what I can find of Admiralty Chart 31 (South Coast of Cornwall Harbours). I haven't a copy of Chart 31 and there only seems to be small scale images of it on the internet but it would appear that the canting basin is on a drying height area (green on the chart) although I can't make out the depth numbers. It would account for the difference in the water colour. Charlestown used to be a china clay shipping port but nothing much comes in there now except the sailing ships and tourist boats.
